Randi

We were just about to enter the restaurant for our late dinner and listen to the blues, when I got a FaceTime call from Samantha. I turned to Sam and said, “Sorry, I better answer this.”

“Of course. Do you want me to go get us a table?” he asked.

“No. I’m sure she just wants to rub it in on what she’s doing.” I answered the call and her face appeared on my phone. “Hi. How’s the show?” I asked.

“It hasn’t started yet, but the seats are amazing. This reminds me of the time we got thrown out. Do you remember that?” she asked.

I nodded. “Please don’t get in any trouble tonight. I didn’t bring any bail money,” I teased.

“How are things going with you and your boyfriend?” she asked and I cringed.

I looked at Sam who had a grin on his face. He didn’t seem troubled by the label at all. That was a good sign. I knew things were going great between us, but we never talked about…feelings or where this was going. Funny how we talked so much but had been able to avoid the topic of us. It had kind of been intentional on my part. I was enjoying myself so much that I didn’t want to ruin it with something…serious. What if he’s not feeling what I’m feeling?

“Things are fine. We’re just about to go eat. Why don’t you and I talk about the show on Monday?” I suggested.

“What? You want to talk about a show during work hours? That doesn’t sound like you at all. Guess Sam is good for you. Maybe he’ll loosen you up a little.,” she stated.

“I’m not uptight,” I replied.

“Not about sex, but damn it Randi, you take work so seriously that you forget that you decided to design sex rooms because it was supposed to be fun. Maybe you need to put one in your house so you and Sam can have some fun.”

“And maybe you need to mind your own business,” I said firmly, knowing my cheeks were already turning pink.

“I’m just saying that the best way to recommend things to your customers is to have personal experience using the…product. That’s just marketing 101.”

“And this is sister 101. Don’t give sex advice.” Because we don’t need it.

“Fine. But I actually was calling for another reason. You know these tickets that you didn’t want?”

“Because I had plans already? Yes. What about them?” I asked.

“The person who sent them is here. And by the way, he’s funny as hell. I think we’re going to go out for drinks after the show,” she said.

My heart raced. So many things ran through my mind, worst of all is that guy was some stalker who had set this all up so he could…Abduct us. I should be there with her. I never would’ve let the guy even talk to us long enough to ask her out, never mind her accepting.

“Sam, you can’t go out with him. You don’t even know him. It’s…dangerous.” And stupid.

“It’s fine. He’s cool. We’ve been joking around since I got here.”

“Just because he’s funny, doesn’t mean he’s….” Before I could finish a familiar face popped on the screen beside her. Bob. “What are you doing there?” I asked, totally shocked to learn it was Sam’s friend.

“I thought I’d be enjoying a concert with you and my buddy, Sam. Boy was I shocked to find out you sent your sister instead,” he replied.

“Pleasantly surprised, right?” Samantha questioned Bob.

He grinned. “Of course. You are so much more…fun than either of those two.”

I hadn’t seen him since the day I learned I’d been played and had fallen into his prank along with Sam.

“Leave my sister alone. You’re not the…type of person she needs in her life,” I warned.

Samantha said, “Wow, wait a minute. I thought you just said sister code was to butt out of each other’s personal life. Was that supposed to apply only to your life or mine as well?”

I could see she was angry, but she didn’t have all the facts. Well, she had most of them, but not the most important. How shitty he made me feel about myself, about how foolish and gullible I am.
