Oh shit.

I’ve never made such an error before. “I…I thought he was the owner or I’d never have done any work for him here. I thought he was your…I thought he was doing all this as a gift to you.”

Sam cocked a brow and asked, “You thought he was gay?”

I nodded.

Sam burst out laughing.

“I’m not sure what about this situation you find funny,” I said.

“If you knew Bob like I do, you would. He prides himself as being a ladies’ man and you thought he was gay. That in itself just made this all worth it,” Sam stated.

“So you and Bob are not…”

“No. We’re not,” he said firmly.

I was confused. “Why would he do all this? I mean he hired me to build you a sex room.”

“Because Bob thinks with one thing, his dick. It’s all about his next conquest. I’m not that person. For years he’s been trying to get me to loosen up. I’m sure this was just another way of trying to accomplish that.”

I thought of the color pallet throughout the house and part of me understood why Bob did this. It didn’t make it any more right though.

“I’m sorry. I can’t refund his money, but if you’d like, can come back sometime next week and…take it all down.”

He shook his head. “This isn’t your fault. It’s Bob’s. I’ll deal with it.”

I wish that was true. But I didn’t verify he had the authority to have me do this work and I couldn’t deny that.

“Sam, I’d like to make some sort of restitution for all of this. Won’t you at least let me come and help you take it all down?” I asked.

He shrugged. “Sure. What about tomorrow night? We can have dinner and then start packing all this stuff up?”

Dinner?

“I could just come after you eat,” I said.

“And I could just do it all by myself,” he stated.

I smiled. “Okay. Dinner it is. What time would you like me to come by?”

“How about six?” he suggested.

I nodded. “Okay. I’ll see you tomorrow, Sam. And once again, I’m really sorry about all this.”

“Don’t worry about it. I’m so tired tonight that I’ll probably fall asleep and think it was all just a dream.”

I wish I could.

I grabbed my bags and headed out the door to my car that was parked on the street. When I turned and looked back, Sam was still standing in the doorway watching me. Once I got inside my car and started it, he waved and closed his door.

There was something about Sam that I found very…appealing. Right now, I couldn’t afford to think about it. I was so embarrassed by my error that all I wanted to do was go home, have a good cry and bury my head in my pillow.

Hopefully tomorrow I’ll feel differently about all of this.

Hopefully not worse.
