Chapter Six

Lindsay

I got home long before Samantha did last night, which I was grateful for. I hadn’t been in the mood to answer a bunch of questions, but now in the morning’s light there was no avoiding the knocking on my bedroom door.

“If you don’t answer me, I’m going to come in anyway.”

“Fine, come in,” I said, pulling the blanket over my head. I could hear her, but I still wasn’t ready for the bright light that I knew she was about to turn on.

A moment later, I felt her hop onto my bed and slide under the covers beside me. “Okay. Spill it. And don’t leave out a thing.”

“We went out to eat. He brought me home. I went to bed. Alone.” That really did sum it up. No need to tell her we were going out again in two days. I mean, a lot could happen between now and then. He could call and change his mind, or one of us could become ill or...he forgets all about it.

“That’s it? He didn’t even notice you in that dress? I mean, you were looking drop dead gorgeous. Hell, if I liked girls, I would’ve asked you out myself.”

I pulled the blanket down and looked at her. “What on earth are you talking about?”

Samantha laughed. “I knew that would get you to come out from under the covers. So, since I have your attention, want to hear about my date? Since yours seems...boring as hell.”

“It wasn’t boring. We had a great time,” I said firmly, and with a bit too much excitement in my tone.

“Really? Funny. You made it sound boring. Maybe you didn’t want to tell me about it? I don’t know why. I mean, I dressed you, did your makeup…I would think you owe me some details!” Samantha teased.

“Fine. Dinner was great, and we’re seeing each other again on Saturday. But really, that’s it. He was a perfect gentleman who spent way too much on dinner.”

“You still don’t know, do you?”

“Know what?” I asked.

“Who he is.”

“Yes, I do. He’s a lawyer,” I said.

“That’s what he does, not who he is. I swear, sometimes I think you spend too much time reading books and not watching the news.”

“The news? You mean the bad news. I read to escape. I’ve traveled the world through books.”

“And yet you don’t even know who you went out with! I mean, Lindsay, he’s from one of the richest families in Boston.”

“He’s...he’s....that Heart family?” Everyone knew the name. Streets were named after them, and so were parks and buildings. Samantha nodded, and I asked, “Are you positive?”

“Lindsay, one thing I know is who’s who in Boston.”

“At least when it comes to men,” I teased.

“Hey, that’s--” She sighed. “--true.”

I might be joking with Samantha, but inside, I was trying to process what she just told me. I knew Phillip had money, the limo verified that. But the Heart family wasn’t just rich, they were filthy rich. It also explained why people in the restaurant had been looking at us. Well, actually, looking at him. I thought for sure I had seen someone pull out their phone and snap a photo. He didn’t notice because it was his lifestyle. One that I had no problem reading about, but never would want to be living.

“Oh, my God.”

“What’s wrong?” Samantha asked.

“We’re supposed to go out to eat Saturday in South Boston.”

“And that is a bad thing?” she inquired.

“You know Everybody’s Favorite Diner on Little Neck Road?”
