So I lie.To me, the truth is very black and white. But until I knew Samantha was okay, I didn’t really care. “Thanks. I’ll do that.”

“I’ll be at your apartment in ten minutes.”

“You don’t have to do that,” I said.

“I’ll be there. Just wait for me. Trust me, it will be a lot easier taking the limo than looking for parking.”

“But your work…”

“Can wait. Now go get ready. I’ll see you soon.”

He ended the call and I rushed to my room to get dressed. My stomach was doing flips and I felt sick. I needed to eat something, because the last thing I ate was the dessert Phillip had purchased for me. While waiting, I made a cup of coffee, put some peanut butter on a piece of bread, and downed both. Eating so quickly didn’t help my stomach at all, but at least I wouldn’t pass out from lack of food.

I heard the buzzer and I knew Phillip was here. I pressed the intercom, “I’m coming right down.” I grabbed my purse and took the steps two at a time. I had to remind myself to slow down or I’d be the next one in the ER.

He opened the door to the limo and we were off. The next hour was spent zipping from one ER to the next, and each came up “no patient by that name.”

“Maybe she’s been discharged,” he said.

Or not and she’s admitted or…I couldn’t even bring myself to think of what could’ve happened. I sank back in the seat of the limo when I saw her long blonde hair blowing in the wind. She wasn’t alone, either. “Stop the car, please,” I shouted.

The driver slammed on his brakes and Phillip asked, “What did you see?”

“Samantha.” I pointed to her standing with someone I assumed to be Marcel. She must’ve caught sight of the limo and started heading over with her new beau. Damn it. We should’ve kept the windows closed.

“Would you like me to have the driver pull away?” Phillip asked jokingly.

In a low voice I asked, “Can I answer that after we find out what happened?”

He chuckled. “From the way those two are holding hands, I’d say he either saved her life or they’re a couple.”

“I swear, she’s going to need medical attention if she just dragged us out on a wild goose chase for nothing,” I huffed. I was shocked to see that Phillip didn’t seem upset in the least. I thought for sure he’d be angry about leaving work. Instead, he was smirking. “You find this funny?” I asked.

“I don’t know your friend, but from what I’ve learned, maybe we should’ve anticipated this.” I nodded as Samantha made her way to the window. “Should we get out so you can…”

“Hear her excuse?”

“I was thinking ‘do some introductions,’ but that works too.”

“Okay, let’s get this over with so you can go back to work.” And I can go home and die of embarrassment from whatever Samantha has to say.

Outside the vehicle, Samantha said, sounding surprised to see us there, “What are you guys doing here?”

I said, trying to control my anger, “Looking for you. Your message made it sound…urgent.”

“Really? What did I say?”

I wasn’t about to get into it right now. But I was adding this to the list of things we needed to discuss.

“I may have…misunderstood you when you said you were at the ER.” Because the words you chose to use said you might be sick or hurt.

“Oh, how sweet. And you and Phillip were out and decided to come and check on me instead,” she smiled.

“No. He was working and decided to pick me up so I wouldn’t have to search for you alone,” I clarified.

Samantha beamed from ear to ear. “You dropped everything to…”

“Yes, to look for you,” I said firmly.
