“No. To be there for me.” Samantha placed her hands over her heart and said dramatically, “That is just so…sweet,” Turning to her companion she said, “Don’t you think so, Marcel?”

Marcel seemed to be as confused by this entire situation as we had been. Get ready for a lot more of this, buddy. She’s a handful.

I wanted to break the tension of this moment not just for me, but for Phillip and Marcel. I extended my hand to Samantha’s beau and said, “Hello, I’m Lindsay and this is Phillip.”

He shook my hand. “Very nice to meet you. I’ve heard a lot about you.” Then he greeted Phillip. “Mr. Heart, it’s a pleasure.”

Samantha and I both looked at him and I asked, “You already know him?”

Marcel shook his head. “Not personally, but everyone at the hospital is grateful for the Heart family’s generosity. Last year they had an entirely new intensive care unit built and donated all new equipment. They have helped save countless lives.”

I turned to Phillip, wondering why he hadn’t told me about that. Then I realized he hadn’t ever boasted about anything. When we spoke, we talked more about things that were personal to us - our likes and dislikes, family and friends. But it was nice to hear about this side of him, too.

Phillip only nodded and said, “Nice meeting you.”

“Well, since you seem to be okay, I guess Phillip and I can get back to what we were doing,” I said.

“God, I hope not,” Samantha said. “Do something fun, something…outrageous!”

“You mean like playing hooky from work?” Like you appear to be doing?

“Exactly. It’s too beautiful a day not to spend it with someone you care about.”

I rolled my eyes. Marcel cut in before I could correct her. “Samantha, speaking of work. My shift is about to start, and I need to go inside.” He kissed her briefly then turned to us. “Nice meeting you both. Maybe we all can get together for dinner one night.”

I would like to get to know Marcel more, because most of Samantha’s boyfriends were history before I even got to know they existed. But I wasn’t sure Phillip wanted to spend that much time with Samantha.

“We’ll look at our schedule and let you know,” Phillip responded. Was that his polite version of a ‘hell no’?

Samantha walked away hand in hand with Marcel, towards the ER entrance. Phillip and I climbed back into the limo. “I can’t believe her. She seemed clueless about how concerned I was.”

“I think the only thing Samantha can see right now is her doctor friend,” Phillip said. “Not that I have any experience in this, but I hear love can mess with a person’s better judgment.”

“Good thing she’s dating a doctor. Maybe he’ll find a way to fix what ails her,” I laughed.

“I can’t take the entire afternoon off, but what do you say about grabbing a coffee before I drop you off at home?”

I was about to decline his offer, but Samantha had a point. It was too nice not to enjoy some time with Phillip. “How about a fresh cup at my place?” And maybe a little mid-day delight too.

Phillip grinned, reading my mind. “On second thought, I think I will clear my schedule.” He put an arm around me and slid me over to sit closer. “You do make a wonderful cup of coffee.”

And you’ve become my favorite dessert.
