“My limo is downstairs. Tell the driver I told him to take you anywhere you wish.”

“Are you trying to get rid of me?” she asked.

“Yes,” we said in unison.

“Fine. But you guys owe me,” she said before leaving the room.

When I heard the door shut, I put my focus back on the only thing that mattered to me: the beautiful woman sitting beside me.

“Lindsay,” I started.

“I love you, too, Phillip,” she said, before I could tell her again.

I’ve never heard more beautiful words in my life. My heart raced and a weight was lifted. She loves me. I still had no idea why. I’m arrogant, stubborn, and only now learning how to be fun. But I wasn’t about to remind her of all those traits. Right now, I just wanted to hold her and hear her say it again. Pulling her onto my lap, I said, “Maybe you could repeat those words again too.”

She smiled at me and said, “I love you. And I’m sorry I walked out of the bedroom. I was just…hurt.”

“I know. I’m sorry. I should’ve told you before.”

“That you love me?”

Smiling, I replied, “That, too. But I honestly wasn’t ready to bring you to meet my parents until you and I actually spoke about how we feel. We’ve only known each other a few weeks. None of this makes any sense to me. But I know how I feel. I just wasn’t sure how you felt.”

“I’ve been facing the same dilemma. How do I tell you I love you when this all feels as though it’s a dream? One that I don’t want to wake from.”

I leaned over and kissed her lightly. “It’s no dream. Would you like me to carry you back to your room and prove it to you?”

She smiled. “Although I’d love that, I think there’s something else we should be doing.”

There was nothing more important to me than showing her how much I love her. I wanted to tell her that, but apparently, she had other ideas. What’s important to her, is important to me. “And what is that, my love?”

“I believe it is called brunch. Even though I’d much rather be here with you, your mother is expecting us. We should go.”

I was shocked. I just learned that the only woman I have ever uttered the words, I love you too, loves me in return. Spending this joyous revelation surrounded by my family, sure wasn’t how I wanted to celebrate. “You really want to go? I mean, we can always go next week.” I had to try, but somehow I already knew her answer.

She shook her head. “Your mother will be disappointed if we don’t.” Lindsay slipped off my lap and added, “So you have two choices, I go alone, or you take me.”

I laughed. “I have a feeling you’re not joking.”

“Nope. You’re a lucky man to have a family that loves and cares about you. Why wouldn’t I want to be part of that?” she asked.

I stood up and tipped her face up to meet my gaze. “We go together, but under one stipulation.”

“What is that?” she asked.

“Tonight, we sleep at my place. No interruptions.”

She got up on her tippy toes and said, “Let’s seal that deal with a kiss.”

The taste of her lips made me want to pull her back into my arms. But she was right. I loved her, and if she was going to be part of my life, she might as well start now.

“Then I suggest you put some clothes on before I change my mind.”

Lindsay giggled all the way back to her room. I stayed in the living room waiting for her. Pulling out my cell phone I sent another text to Andrew. CHANGE OF PLANS. TELL MOTHER WE WILL BE THERE, JUST A LITTLE LATE.

As expected, I received the same response. WILL DO.

Mother, please honor your word. Lindsay means everything to me.
