“Lindsay, there are a lot of things I’m not sure of, but my feelings for you are certain. I love you. I want to build a life with you. I am not ready to get married tomorrow, but I know I want us to start talking about our future. We’ve never discussed family, or children.”

“Do you…want children?” I asked, praying he said yes.

“With you, yes. And with any luck, more than one.”

This was music to my ears. He’d never hinted that he was thinking so deeply about our lives. If we weren’t on the street among other people, I might wrap my arms around his neck and suggest we get in some practice on the baby-making process. And he had to tell me all this while I’m at work.

At least I knew. My heart pounded, and I said, “I would love a boy who looks just like you.”

Phillip chuckled. “The poor kid. Maybe girls instead. But we have plenty of time to work on that.”

“Yes, we do.” And a lifetime to figure out the rest. At least the conversation had started, and as with everything else, Phillip and I were in sync with what we wanted.

I didn’t realize it, but I had been keeping a wall up around my heart for years. Somehow Phillip found a way around it. And once I learned not to overthink everything and just feel, I found the man I love waiting for me, open arms. A peace came over me. No longer was I worried about what tomorrow may bring. Whatever it is, Phillip and I will face it together.

“Don’t you want to drink your coffee while it’s hot?” he asked.

I shook my head and wrapped my arms around his waist. “I have you to keep me warm.”

“Then I’d better stay with you until you get those tickets,” he responded, holding me tight.

Although I would love that, I knew he had to get to the office eventually. I’d remind him of that, but not just yet. Right now, even on the sidewalk with strangers gawking at us, I knew my life was wonderful, and each day was only going to get better. “Do you know where we are?”

He looked around and said, “Clark’s office building.”

I shook my head. “No. We’re standing in the exact spot we met several weeks ago.”

He smiled. “Remind me to send Greg some free tickets.”

“Greg?”

“Wasn’t he the client you were working for that night?” he asked. I nodded, surprised he remembered. “Then I owe him. Because I can’t imagine not having you in my life.”

Smiling I said, “I have a feeling fate would’ve intervened one way or another.”

He kissed my forehead and said, “I love you, Lindsay. Don’t ever change.”

His words touched my heart like nothing else. “I love you too, Phillip.”

I didn’t need to try to fit in his world, or him in mine. We’re perfect as we are.

The End
