“I won’t need it, but thank you.” Before he could ask me for my information, Joyelle came around the corner and I added, “I think she’ll need your spot in order to pull the car on the flatbed.”

The policeman took another look at the Ferrari, and I thought he was going to insist on seeing my credentials regarding the vehicle. But Joyelle hopped out of her truck and said, “Sorry, officer. I’ll have this vehicle out of your way shortly.”

He nodded. “No problem. I’ll move my car behind his and monitor traffic until you’re through.”

As soon as he moved his patrol car, Joyelle backed her tow truck up to the Ferrari, hooked it up and pulled it onto the flatbed. Then she asked me, “Where do you want it?”

I hadn’t made any arrangements. “I’m not sure yet.”

“Well, you definitely need a body shop. If you were in Rhode Island, I would be able to refer you to a few, but I don’t know anyone in Boston.”

“So what were you doing here?” I asked.

“Funny that you ask. I was here to repo a Ferrari just like yours.”

I wasn’t about to tell her this wasn’t mine, and really, I hoped she wasn’t here to repossess Tyler’s. He did say he’d been having financial difficulties. Maybe he was behind on his car payments. It was none of my business. All I wanted to do was get the damn thing fixed and into storage.

“Looks like you’re towing this one to whatever body shop you trust,” I said.

She looked shocked. “You’re serious?” I nodded, and she said, “This is a sports car. You don’t care where I bring it?”

“That’s not exactly what I said. But I’m trusting you to bring it to the appropriate place, where they’ll make it look like nothing happened to it,” I stated.

“Not that I have anything as beautiful as this, but I know where I’d bring mine. It’s an hour away,” Joyelle replied.

“That’s fine. I just need it fixed and quickly,” I stated. Tyler hopefully wouldn’t be returning too quickly, because if he did, it meant he’d lost Chance.

“You got it. Did you want to ride with me?” she asked.

“To drop off the car?” I asked.

“I figure you’ll need a ride home. I feel bad leaving you on the side of the road.”

“They have taxis here if I need one, but thank you,” I said. She headed towards her truck and I called out, “Unless you’d like to get a bite to eat after you drop it off.”

She turned and shot me a questioning look. “Are you asking me out?”

I wasn’t even sure myself. “I owe you for the tow.”

She smiled and said, “Don’t worry. I was going to bill you.”

“Is that a no?” Not that I haven’t been shot down before, but for some reason I really thought she’d be…more enthused about it.

“Unless you’re asking me for pizza or a burger, then I think I’ll need to pass. I’m not exactly dressed for anything else,” she said.

I looked her over, and although she wore black work boots and a t-shirt with her company logo across the front, her tight jeans didn’t hide her feminine curves. Curves that I had enjoyed watching as she worked.

“I could do a burger.”

Joyelle crossed her arms and asked, “Why?”

“Because I’m hungry,” I replied, leaving out the part that I also would like to get to know her.

“Well, I have at least two hours before I’m free to eat. I still have to drop off a car, in case you’ve forgotten.”

She was right, dinner with her didn’t make any sense. Yet I found myself asking, “Well, would you be free tomorrow night?”

Joyelle looked me over and said, “Let me check my schedule and I’ll text you.” She climbed into the cab of her truck, closed the door, and rolled down her window. “I’ll send you the body shop details, too.”
