Chapter Nine

Joyelle

“Don’t blame me for you not getting any. I wasn’t even there for five minutes,” Lizzy said, trying to defend her actions.

“You didn’t even give me any warning. How about a knock on the door at least?” I said, leaning against her kitchen counter, holding a mug of strong coffee. “I’m surprised Richard didn’t question me as to why you just walked in.”

“I wasn’t thinking.” She made a puzzled expression and then asked with a pout, “He didn’t ask anything about me?”

Lizzy loved being the center of attention. Back in high school, she was the captain of the cheerleaders. Also won homecoming queen. We’d never competed on anything, and definitely not over men. Something else was going on.

“Lizzy, what is it that you’re not telling me?”

She shrugged. “I’m happy for you, I really am, but…”

“But what?” I prodded.

“Guess I’m a little jealous, that’s all,” she sighed.

“You’re jealous of me?”

She nodded.

I was shocked. It was the first time I’d ever heard her say that about anyone, never mind me. “Lizzy, you’re joking, right? I mean, you date all the time,” I reminded her. “And I never do.”

“True, but that’s not it.”

I know my love life sucks. She didn’t have to rub it in. But if it didn’t have to do with my dating, then what the hell was this about? I was going to keep questioning her until she began to make sense. Then again, maybe she did make sense, and I was just too tired to grasp what she was trying to tell me. It was possible she was upset about walking in on us making out in her kitchen. Maybe thought I might have taken her advice to literally and was about to do it right on her table. Another few minutes and it really would’ve been awkward. I might have been willing to use her bed, because I’d just wash the sheets after, but really, I’m not the do it on the kitchen table type. The shower would’ve been tempting too.

“But you’re the one who kept telling me to do this,” I said. “You should be grinning that I finally listened to you.”

“That goes without saying. But Richard couldn’t take his eyes off you. Not that I want his attention, but I haven’t had anyone look at me with such…wanting, in an awfully long time.”

I had been so embarrassed when we were interrupted that I couldn’t look at him or at Lizzy. “I don’t know about that. I think we were just caught up in the moment. That’s all.”

“Caught up in something. I think he really likes you.”

“I thought you said wanting, not liking,” I said.

“I wasn’t there long enough to really tell. Next time…”

“There won’t be a next time,” I stated firmly.

“Oh, God, don’t tell me my intrusion made him upset and you’re not going out again,” she said, looking truly sorry.

“I’m talking about you.”

“What about me?” she asked.

“You’re not walking in on us again. If he asks me out, he’s going to have to pick me up at my place. And once he sees my small efficiency apartment, there’s no chance things are going to get that…heated again.”

Lizzy smiled. “So you want to see him again.”

Hell yes!“I do, but I’m not calling him. If he wants to see me, he can call me.”

“Didn’t we discuss this already? There’s nothing wrong with going after what you want. It’s obvious you want Richard.”

“I guess.”
