“Oh, please. You were so focused on him that you never even heard me enter the apartment.”

I put my now empty coffee mug on the counter and crossed my arms. “You didn’t knock.”

“And you didn’t hear me call out your name.”

“You didn’t, did you?” Lizzy nodded, and I blushed. “I guess I was a bit…distracted.”

“You both were. That’s why I think you should call him today and make plans for the weekend.”

“And what am I supposed to ask him to do? I’m working, remember?”

Lizzy rolled her eyes. “I could be wrong, but I believe you own the company. If you want to give yourself the weekend off, then do it.”

“I make a lot of money on the weekends,” I stated.

“Money pays bills, but it can’t buy happiness. And Joyelle, I know when you’re thinking of Richard. There’s a look in your eyes that gives you away. A look that says you’re happy.”

“God, you really are an impossible romantic. I barely know the guy! We’ve only been out twice.”

“And would’ve had sex too if it wasn’t for Snowball.”

Thanks Snowball. No more treats for you.

“Okay. I’ll call, but I’m not promising to take the weekend off.”

“Yes, you are, because if you’re not spending it with Richard, you’re spending it with me. And we’re not going to be staying home watching movies, either. We’re going to do something fun. Something…”

“Adventurous?” I teased, knowing her idea of adventure was a new shopping mall.

“Sure. But I know if you call Richard, you’ll forget all about me having no plans for the weekend,” she chuckled.

I knew her well enough to know that laugh had been forced. “Not true. You’re my best friend,” I said, and walked over and hugged her. “Nothing comes between us. If Richard asks me out this weekend, I’ll tell him ‘Sorry, but I have plans with my BFF.’”

“Well, that’s a surefire way not to get a date,” she replied.

I really didn’t care. I had given up everything for one man already and ended up with nothing in the end. Lizzy had stuck by me at my lowest times. I have no idea how I would’ve gotten through it all without her by my side. But this wasn’t a time to get sappy, so I responded, “I love you, Lizzy. You’re always watching out for me.”

“Love you too, Joyelle. But I love you more when you take my advice. Now go call.”

I laughed. “No. It’s morning and I’m going to work. If I get a break, I’ll send him a text. Will that do?”

She huffed. “It’ll have to.”

That’s right.

“I’d better get my truck and hit the road,” I said.

Lizzy snickered, “You will definitely be the best dressed repo girl there ever was.”

I looked down and totally forgot that I was still dressed for my date with Richard. “Oh, hell. Now I’m really going to be late.”

“Maybe it’s a sign for you to call Richard now, since you probably missed the first job anyway,” she said.

I grabbed my purse and my keys. “You’re not helping.”

She giggled. “Wasn’t trying to.”

I rolled my eyes and headed out the door. Lizzy could usually get me laughing, but right now, I was stressed. Stressed about being on time to repossess the car, sure, but also - what the heck was I going to say to Richard this time?
