Tyler’s mouth hung open. “You’re going to pay me to stay home?”

“Consider it a medical leave so you can spend the time with your son.” I couldn’t think of any other resolution and I was sure my human resources department would lecture me on the legalities of doing this, but it felt…right.

Tyler got up from his seat and said, “I promise, when I return to work, I’ll be the best damn employee you have.”

“Right now, just think about your family.”

“I can’t just take your money. It doesn’t feel right.” Tyler reached into his pocket and tossed me his keys. “These are the keys to my Ferrari. It’s yours until I’ve worked off my debt.”

I didn’t need or want his car. “Take your keys, Tyler.” I extended them to him, but he shook his head.

“I can’t take charity, not even from you,” he said firmly.

“Fine. I’ll put it in the parking garage so it’s safe,” I stated.

He smiled. “Thanks. I know it’s crazy, but Chance is the one who picked it out.”

“Then maybe you really need to hold onto it,” I stated.

“No. He can’t ride in it right now because being in a vehicle makes him dizzy. Another sign that the tumor is…winning,” he said softly.

Damn it. I wished there was something I could do, or say, but for the first time in my life, I felt useless.

“Please,” he said. “Just hold onto it for me as a thank you for what you’re doing for me.”

This wasn’t a matter of what the Ferrari meant to Tyler, it was a matter of pride. He was losing enough already - I wasn’t about to take that from him, too. I nodded and slipped the keys into my pocket.

“Okay. Keep in touch and let me know if you need anything.” I wasn’t about to wish him luck. If what Tyler said was accurate, it really was a miracle Chance needed.

Tyler left my office and I called down to security to let them know I no longer needed them to escort an employee out. Then I explained that there would be a red Ferrari in my parking spot for a few days with my permission. I was willing to hold it, but I needed to store it someplace other than my office building. My penthouse allows for extra parking, but those spots were occupied by my other vehicles.

I needed to figure out storage and transport, so I pulled out my cell phone and called Clark.

“I hope Mother didn’t rope you into staying all afternoon,” Clark joked as he answered the phone.

“No.” I had been the last to leave. “I had business I needed to handle.”

“Sounds pretty damn boring.”

“I thought you were working as well?” I questioned. “At least that is what you said as you made your escape.”

Clark laughed. “I’m ‘working’ on a bourbon right now with the company of a stunning blonde.”

“If you can pry yourself away long enough, I was wondering if I can use one of your parking spots?”

“Don’t tell me you’re purchasing another car,” he said.

“Since you like borrowing them, I wouldn’t complain,” I stated.

“True. What are you parking this time?” he asked.

“A Ferrari.”

“Not what I would’ve expected, but sure. I’ll notify security that you’ll be bringing it by so they don’t have it towed.”

“I don’t think they would have a Ferrari towed,” I said, doubtful.

“Trust me, if you had parked it in one of my spots without asking, you’d be collecting it from the impound lot,” Clark laughed. “That goes for your McLaren or your Aston Martin.”
