“Why?” Lizzy asked, her tone filled with anger.

“Because you look like you want to rip his head off,” Shanda added.

Lindsay added, “That sums it up for us all, but Reanna at least knows how we can dispose of the body.”

Reanna shot them a warning look. “You’re not supposed to make jokes like that in front of a police officer.”

Anne said, “It should be criminal to break a woman’s heart the way he did.”

Raising my hands in defense, I said, “You ladies are making a lot more out of this than there is. I didn’t break anyone’s heart.” It ended before it got to that point.

“You really think so?” Lizzy asked. “Because I hear PJ is leaving New Hampshire tonight.”

“She is,” I stated.

“She’s not even coming by to say goodbye. When I told her we would stop by the hotel instead, guess what she said?” Lizzy asked.

I wasn’t in the mood for this game. My fuse was running short. But I certainly deserved this treatment, even if I didn’t like it.

“She said no,” I said flatly.

“Care to explain why?” Shanda inquired.

“For the record, she was leaving before I said what I did. So you can’t blame me for her departure.” Just for her being upset. That’s totally on me.

Reanna raised a brow and began interrogating me like we were down at the police station. “Her travel plans were already in place?”

I nodded.

“Then why doesn’t she want to see us? I mean, I understand you. I’m sure you said something…. Heart-like.”

Her husband Jerry asked, “What is that supposed to mean?”

All the women looked at him and Reanna said, “You know darn well that you men don’t always think before speaking. At least not when it comes to dealing with women.”

Shanda nodded. “We’re not a business deal, you know.”

Anne said, “And if we were, you sure as heck wouldn’t risk losing it over something--”

“Stupid,” Lindsay finished. “So, what did you say?”

“Don’t you think you’ve done enough meddling?” I asked them.

Lizzy looked pissed. “Meddling? Is that what you call it? I was trying to help because you’re too blind to see what a wonderful person PJ is. I know, you’re not looking for a relationship, but that’s when the right one comes along. And trust me, trust all of us, PJ is the right one.”

The women all nodded and my brothers stood behind them, not uttering a word.

Cowards.

“Guess we’ll never know, because she probably already left for the airport.” And I’m not going to chase her down and declare feelings for her that I’m not even sure I have yet. “Now if you’re all finished lecturing me on how to handle my life, I’d like to go and pack my things.”

“You’re leaving?” Phillip asked.

Oh, now you found your voice?

“Yes.”

Richard said, “I think you should stay.”
