“I’m going to be totally honest with you. We have two days left here and I don’t want to spend them being glared at,” I stated firmly. “It would be a waste of my time, and not enjoyable for any of us.”

Joyelle walked over and touched my arm. “I’m sorry we came at you like that. We were all thrilled to have gotten to know PJ, and it came as a shock that she left so suddenly. Will you stay if we promise not to talk about her?”

The problem was, even if they didn’t mention her name, my own thoughts would drive me crazy.

Lizzy added, “I promise, Clark. Not one word.”

“All right. I’ll stay.”

I wasn’t staying for them or for myself. I would stay because that’s what PJ would’ve done. And she wouldn’t forgive me for being an asshole to all of them.

They smiled, and I walked over to the cooler and pulled out a beer.

Have a safe trip home PJ. I wish you knew how much I regretted what I said.

I downed the contents of the bottle and grabbed another. These next few days were going to be hell, but as long as there’s beer, I might make it through without pissing anyone else off.

There’d better be a keg hidden somewhere in these mountains.
