“It’s okay to tell me you don’t want to see me anymore. I already told you, I’m not a very likeable guy.”

“That’s not it at all. If anything, I was enjoying my time with you too much. With you, everything felt…easy.”

Like we’ve known each other for ages.

“I agree. But then I’d have expected you to want to stay, not flee,” I said.

“Clark, I live in Orlando. You live in Boston. Leaving was inevitable. I just didn’t see any point in delaying it,” she said, her eyes once again sad.

“Yet here I am.”

PJ nodded. “Yes, you are. And I’m glad, too.”

I shot her a grin and asked, “Missed me?”

“No. I’m just hungry and didn’t feel like dining alone,” she teased.

This light mood was one of the things I enjoyed about her. She could laugh and joke about almost anything.

Except for giving her friends shit. That was one mistake I wouldn’t make twice.

“Then I suggest we order because I haven’t eaten, either.”

After the meal, PJ said, “Did you want to talk about dessert now?”

Don’t tempt me.

“I don’t eat sweets, but you go ahead.”

“Didn’t you have ice cream with me?” she asked.

“I did.”

“Did you like it?” she asked.

I chuckled. “Are you trying to convince me that I do like sweets, and I just don’t know it?” That wasn’t going to happen.

She smirked. “Is that a challenge? Because I haven’t backed down from one yet.” Her eyes twinkled with excitement.

Oh, no, I am not wasting that on something like desserts.

“I’ll keep that in mind. So, what are you getting?” I asked.

“Nothing,” she replied.

That’s not what I wanted to hear. It meant dinner was over and soon we’d be parting ways again. “Would you like to go to…a movie or…something?” There was a lot to do in Orlando, but what I wanted was some alone time. If she was anyone else, I’d be blunt and say exactly what I wanted. But unless I wanted to be flying back to Boston tonight, I needed to play this differently.

“Movie? At this time of night? I’d fall asleep,” she said.

“I forgot. You mentioned you need to be at work again in the morning.”

She huffed. “Not anymore.”

“They changed the schedule?” I asked.

She shook her head. “I got fired.”

Good thing I wasn’t eating because I’d have choked on my food. “You’re serious?” She nodded and I asked, “Why?”
