“Although your flowers were beautiful and my favorite, my employer didn’t appreciate them as much as I did.”

Fuck. You’re fired because of me.

“I’m really sorry, PJ. If I had known, I never would’ve sent them. The only reason I sent them there was because I didn’t have your home address.” I needed to fix this. Tomorrow I was going to her job to explain what happened. If they didn’t hire her back, I’d handle it in my own way. Bankrupt their ass, and make them sorry they told me no.

“It’s not your fault. You couldn’t have known. What I don’t get is how did you even know where to find me tonight? I don’t recall mentioning it to you,” she said.

And here we are, back to Lizzy, the one who couldn’t keep her mouth shut.

“I have my ways,” I said.

“But those ways couldn’t find my home address? You might want to try some new ways,” she joked.

I had no idea how she could be laughing when I was the reason she just got terminated. “Is there something I can do?” Anything. You name it.

“How about you follow me home? I could use a glass of wine and I never drink and drive.”

The last thing I was thinking about right now was going to her place for a drink. My mind was racing with what action I needed to take in the morning. I couldn’t turn down her offer. It might not end with us in bed, but no way in hell was I leaving without at least one taste of those lips.

It wasn’t long before we were inside her apartment. It was brightly decorated, nothing like her usual fashion sense. “Your place is nice. I see you like artwork from India.”

“I do. It makes me happy.”

She went into the kitchen to get me a beer and herself a glass of wine. I looked at photos she had hung on the wall over the mantel. She’d mentioned an older brother, but the group I was looking at didn’t seem like the family unit she’d talked about. The older couple were obviously from India, which explained the décor. Another man was about my age, perhaps of African descent.

When PJ returned, she said, “That’s my family I had told you about. My brother Joey is thirty-one and he works for…well, let’s just say the government. My father is a director of purchasing for one of the largest hospital chains in the States. My mother has her own sewing shop. She even teaches quilting classes, not that I’ve ever taken one. I am not very good at sitting still and would probably sew right over my own fingers.”

“Interesting,” I said.

“Guess I failed to mention I’m adopted.” She handed me the beer and said, “Before you open your mouth and say anything you’ll regret, people from all over the world adopt children, not just Americans.”

I laughed. “I know that. And I’d never assume such a thing, either. I was actually thinking about your sewing abilities.”

“Or lack of them,” she corrected.

“Exactly. It’s nice to be able to put something on your ‘suck at’ list for once, and not just keep adding to mine.”

She giggled. “Oh, boy. I’d better not let you talk to my friend Crystal. You could probably fill up an entire journal with things I suck at. However, that’s just her opinion. If you ask me, I’m perfect at everything,” she said, cocking her head jokingly.

I stepped closer and said, “There is one thing I’ve been wondering about.”

“What’s that?” she asked, looking me in the eyes.

“If you’re as good of a kisser as I imagine.”

She gulped and said, “I think you’ll need to find that out for yourself.”

That was the invitation I’d been waiting for. I took her glass of wine and put it with my beer on the end table. Then I brushed the hair from her face, leaned forward, and said, “I’ve changed my mind.”

Her eyes widened and she asked, “You don’t want to kiss me?”

I shook my head. “There is one sweet I’ve been craving since I stumbled upon it on the mountain.”

Tenderly my lips made contact with hers. She tasted of fruity sweet wine. I pulled away slightly and said, “I could do this all night.”

She smiled. “I have no place to be, how about you?”

I wanted to kiss her from head to toe, but I wasn’t about to pressure her in any way. I normally took the lead, but tonight, I was handing the reins over to PJ.
