“Try me,” I said. Hearing about his day would keep my mind off where we were going.

“I stopped in at a pizza joint.”

“That doesn’t sound all that exciting. Was the pizza good?” I asked.

“Didn’t eat. I went there because I thought that was where you worked. I told the guy he shouldn’t have fired you. It really was funny as I defended your honor. He was deeply disappointed with your actions.”

“I never worked at a pizza restaurant.”

“So I found out. Had the wrong place and the wrong person. But I did get some valuable advice from him.”

“And that is?”

He smiled, “You’ll find out, in time.”

My stomach clenched. Great. You’re just full of secrets tonight.

“Is that all you did today?” I asked.

“I’m not sure we should talk about it right now.”

That piqued my interest. “Why is that?”

“I went to the funeral home. I wanted them to hire you back. They explained what happened. No one would tell me who you work for, so I…couldn’t help you,” he replied.

He really looked disappointed about that.

“Clark, you didn’t need to do that. It wasn’t your fault. I’m sure if you knew where I was, you wouldn’t have sent me any flowers.”

“You’d have gotten them, but I would’ve been waiting for you outside.” He chuckled. “I know it’s not funny, but I wish I’d seen their faces when they got delivered. I mean, I told the florist I wanted the happiest, brightest bouquet they had. One that would remind me of your smile. I even made him send me a picture of the final product.”

I laughed. “Let’s just say they stood out. But then again, you did get to see them in my apartment last night. They took up almost the entire kitchen table.”

“I was trying to get your attention,” he said.

“It worked,” I said.

“I hope tonight does as well,” he said.

“Even though I have no idea where we are going, I’m impressed already.”

He leaned over and kissed me lightly. “We’re almost there.”

I looked out the window and noticed we were almost at the airport. I couldn’t think of why he might be bringing me there. But the limo took the airport exit and I shot Clark a look. “We’re flying somewhere?”

“Yes. But I’m still not telling you where.”

I sighed. “What if I told you I’m afraid to fly?” I asked.

He looked at me. “I…never thought about that.”

“You should. But I’m not,” I winked. “Maybe you want to tell me where we are going just in case I have any phobias.”

“You’re very good at this. You almost had me. But sorry, my lips are sealed.”

I smiled and leaned into him. “I know how to open them.” I licked my top lip slowly, deliberately.

“I’ll give you one hint,” he said.
