“That doesn’t answer why you did all this,” she prodded.

“The last time I was here, I had the best intentions to talk. That didn’t happen.”

“Because someone was irresistible, and I couldn’t keep my hands off him. Kind of like tonight,” she said, and ran her hands up my chest.

I grabbed hold of them and held her still. “No rushing things tonight. I mean it. Tonight, we talk.”

“Okay. I’m listening,” she said.

I had rehearsed what I wanted to say, but now, I had no idea where to start. So I was going to just let the words flow.

“I left for Boston and it seemed to have ended before we had a chance to explore this…connection we have. I think you feel it, too.”

“I do,” she said, leaving me to continue.

“Even if you hadn’t called me because of Crystal’s accident, I was coming back for you. Boston has always been my home. It’s where I run my business. My family is there. But you weren’t.”

She swallowed and blinked but said nothing.

Not making this easy on me are you?

“I was looking for the most romantic way I could show you what you mean to me, but my plan was derailed and here we are.”

PJ said, “Clark, there is nothing more romantic than when I called, and you came rushing to be by my side. Of course, all this is pretty romantic, too.”

“And yet it still doesn’t represent a tenth of what I feel for you.” I lifted her hands to my lips, kissed one, then the other. “You’re…so precious to me, PJ. You have become part of me, and I don’t want to let you go. If that means I…move to Orlando, I will.”

“From Boston? You’d give up all that to be here with me? Why?” she asked.

Again with the why.

“This is not easy for me. I’m thirty years old and I’ve never used this word. I searched for any word that could describe how I feel, and only one was right.” Looking her in the eyes, I said, “I’ve fallen in love with you.”

“You love me?” she asked

This is where you tell me you love me, too.

“Yes. The kind of love that would walk through fire. Take a bullet. Give a kidney.”

She smiled and said, “Fly across the country to give me a shoulder to lean on.”

“Yes. I love you, PJ. And before I met you, I swore I’d never say those words. I didn’t believe in them, not for me. But you…you changed that. You’ve changed me.”

“You’re not the only one who changed, Clark. Do you remember when I suddenly booked a flight from New Hampshire back home?”

“I do.”

“It’s because even then I was having strong feelings for you and I was scared that if I didn’t leave, I’d get hurt. But I found out that leaving hurt just as much. I hated being away from you,” she said.

“I’m here now. And if you want, I’ll stay,” I said. I hadn’t figured out how I was going to make that all work out with my company, but I would.

“Clark, what if I told you I’d be willing to leave Orlando?” she asked.

“And come to Boston with me?” I asked hopefully.

She nodded. “Orlando is just a place I live. But I can make anyplace home with you.”

I scooped her into my arms and kissed her. “I love you, PJ. We can decide where to live later. But for now, all I want is to show you how much I love you.”
