“She was waiting for you to tell her you love her, too. Idiot.”

“No.” My eyebrows pinched downward. “She told me she just said that so Draven would leave.”

“She said that immediately, did she? Or was there silence?”

“Well, yeah, I mean. But, look, I was processing.”

She loosed a sigh and paced away from me. “Seriously? She told you she loved you, and you stayed silent.”

I arched a brow. “You were eavesdropping.”

Her cheeks flushed. “No. Well, I came to relay a message from the king, and it was hard not to hear.”

“Some things never change.”

She inched closer to the dagger on her thigh. “Don’t play with me.”

“I’m not. This is all ridiculous. She just told me there is no way we could be soulmates.”

“She was saving what little pride she had left.” Finally, she sat on the sofa by the unlit fire, drumming her fingers on the arm. “So, do you?”

“Do I what?”

She shot me a look. “You know what.”

“I—” My stomach dropped, and I walked to the small cabinet where I’d stored the whiskey. I was going to need a drink for this conversation. Slowly, I poured a glass, knowing better than to ask Erianna if she wanted one. I don’t think I’d ever seen her drink.

She clicked her tongue as I sat across from her. “Sebastian Vangard stuck for words. I never thought I’d see the day.”

“Zach said we’re soulmates.”

“Yes?” she said, as if it were obvious.

“You think we are?”

She sighed as she pressed her fingers against her temples, muttering under her breath. “I do, but what matters is doyouthink you are?”

I swallowed a gulp, the alcohol burning in my throat as I tasted the subtle hints of honey and nutmeg. Then, placing the glass on the mantle, I leaned against the fireplace. “It doesn’t matter. Look, Olivia would tell me if she loved me.”

She scoffed a laugh, pulling her braids over one shoulder. “Ah, yes, because it’s so easy to communicate matters of the heart, as you are clearly demonstrating right now.”

“It’s complicated.”

“These things usually are. Gods, do I have to spell it out for you, Seb? She loves you.”

Butterflies swarmed in my stomach, my heart swelling at the words. Closing my eyes, I basked in the feeling, but doubt trickled in. “You can’t know that. She deserves better. Why would she love me?”

“If I have to hear this one more time, I swear, I’m going to throw you out that window.”

The storm picked up speed, hammering against the windows and walls like an enemy trying to barge in. “Where is she?” I asked.

“Gone to see Draven. He’s leaving tomorrow. In fact, you’ll be helping get him out of here.”

I exhaled a shaky breath and poured myself a second drink. “I’ll talk to her later, then. I don’t want to interrupt their time. It’ll be hard for him to let her go. He loves her, too.”

“He does, doesn’t he?” She lowered her head. “He’s a good man. I’ll miss him.”

“Wow.”
