“If you get in with the crews doing work outside, you get an extra one or two a week, but then you stink to high heaven in between,” Tab said across from him. “It’s not worth it.”

Avery hung his jumpsuit from a rusty hook inside an empty locker in front of him.

“That’s mine,”a voice cried from his left.

“Sorry,” Avery murmured, pulling the suit out of the locker.

“No, it’s not,” Ash snapped, grabbing Avery’s outfit and placing it back on the hook. Ash glared at the omega beside Avery and growled.

“I’m not afraid of you,” the tiny omega shouted.

“Youshouldbe!” Ash blasted back. He turned his focus on Avery. “These aren’t assigned. First come, first served. Take it and stand your ground next time!”

Avery looked between the two men, shaken. “I’m sure there’s room to share in here.” It wasn’t as if they all had much on.

“No thanks,” the tiny omega snapped before another larger omega pulled him close.

“You can share mine,baby.”

The two omegas kissed. Avery’s eyes and mouth went wide.

“Never seen two omegas at it?” Ash asked, humor in his voice.

“No.”

“Get used to it,” Medjul whispered.

The kissing stopped, and the tiny omega gave Avery the finger.

“Okay. Sorry,” Avery replied, lifting his hands in surrender.

The pair stormed off, toward the showers, leaving Avery to finish undressing. He placed his briefs, socks, and his slippers in the locker before trailing behind Tab, Medjul and Ash. It was then that he realized two were missing.

“Where’s Gideon and…um…”

“Vero?” Tab supplied as he grabbed four towels and handed them to Avery.

“Yeah,” he looked down at the stack. “Why do I need all these?”

“You don’t. Being the new guy, you’re going to stand here while we shower and keep dibs on these. If we don’t grab them early, there won’t be any left. When we’re done, you can go shower and we’ll save the last one for you,” Ash said.

“To answer your question, Gideon had court today,” Medjul added. “They pulled him out before first light to prepare.”

“Prepare?”

“Lawyers usually put you in a nice suit so you look respectable and less like a criminal,” Medjul said. “You also get a shower first thing, before the mob.”

“Vero rarely gets out of bed. When the stink gets too bad, we drag him down here and soak his ass,” Tab said.

Avery frowned. It was clear Vero was miserable and possibly suffering some kind of mental illness. He needed help. Theyallneeded help. But was Medjul right? Was he imagining himself as some kind of savior? He’d gotten himself into that mess thinking he was saving his brothers only to end up realizing just how selfish he was. Could he be doing the same thing again?

All while putting Wilder through more torment than was necessary when he was up against a juggernaut he was powerless to stop?

He stared down at the off-white towels that had likely been crisp and bright long ago but had faded with age and use. One even appeared to possibly have a blood stain scattered across it, which caused a shiver to run through him. Steam rose around him as many others showered, wafting around him. He looked away, shocked by all the nudity on display. It wasn’t something he was accustomed to—yet there was also a lingering curiosity that had him peeking here and there.

Lost in thought, he barely noticed Medjul waving him over.

Avery walked closer.
