Tulla pointed to the tenting of Tensen’s pants.“Hedoesn’t seem to mind.”

Tensen glanced down, embarrassed to see a wet spot on his tan trousers. Glaring at the omega, he spun and stormed out.

“Come back any time!” Tulla cried from his dressing room.

There might’ve been more, but Tensen didn’t hear it over the music in the club. Heart slamming in his chest, he forced one foot before the other and hoped to hell Tulla was right about being protected.

Aloud clanging sound woke Avery from the peaceful dream he’d been having. He was at the twins’ birthday party again, surrounded by family. It was a warm late spring day, the blue sky full of fluffy clouds. Auggie rode on the pony as Avery and Lake watched from outside the fence. Across the lawn, he noticed Wilder stalking his way, heat and need in the alpha’s eyes. It awakened the yearning Avery had been hiding away for years.

Instead of that awakening, he came to inside the living nightmare that was his reality.

“Shower day,” Ash cried, grabbing a small cache of toiletries from a shelf in his bunk.

“Shower day?” Avery asked as he sat up and scanned the small space inside.

Ash tossed him a tiny bottle of body wash. “You owe me one, newbie.”

“How do I pay you back?” Avery asked, watching as the others lined up with their little basket of goodies. He slid from his bunk, his socked feet hitting the cold concrete. “Or get these things?”

“Have anyone who can put money into your account?” Medjul said.

“Or you can get a job. Pays shit, but it can help you buy the necessities,” Ash replied.

“A job?” Avery asked.

“Yeah. You can either sign up for cleaning or kitchen crew, but they’re hard to get on these days. A few companies work with the prison for cheap labor. Either way, you get paid shit wages, but it’s not like there’s much else to do around here but sit on your ass,” Tab replied.

“I could get a job in prison but not one in the OQ? How backwards is that?” Avery sat for a few seconds on Medjul’s bunk and pulled on his slippers.

Tab scoffed. “Well, they don’t have the luxury of paying you ten to fifteenvegason therenoout in the OQ. Plus they have to worry about losing time for heats and pregnancies or childcare out there. I mean, they have two of those things to worry about here, but there’s enough consistent, cheap labor inside that they overlook it. Fresh bodies are always pouring in.”

“Slavelabor,” Avery murmured as he rose.

“Bingo,”Medjul replied, bopping Avery on the nose. “College boy’s as smart as he looks.”

“This shit makes no sense,” Avery said. “It’s got to stop. We have to dosomethingto make it stop.”

“Just what do you have in mind that a thousand other omegas haven’t thought of and failed at before you?” Medjul snapped.

Anger swelled through Avery. “I just have to think it through. Therehasto be a way.”

Silence met his statement.

“I am… I’mgoingto do something about this!”

His cellmates looked between themselves before erupting into laughter. The cell door slid open, and they all scrambled out into the walkway, along with a huge crowd of other omegas.

“College boy thinks he’s our savior,” Medjul griped from just outside the cell. “Just what we need.”

“Come on,” Tab said, dragging Avery behind him.

Inmates crowded Avery, some getting their first up close and personal with him. He’d ventured outside the cell only once—at dinner the night before—and even then, it was closer to the end of meal time and few lingered about. His cellmates had circled him, almost as if they offered a protective wall. He’d appreciated it, the fear of the unknown causing panic. By the time they arrived in the cafeteria, most inmates had already left for the common room, which Avery had avoided. His fellow prisoners hadn’t gotten a very good look at him yet. Amongst the throng, Avery cringed, feeling himself growing smaller under their curious stares—not that he could. He was almost as large as a beta and stood out amongst the largely petite crowd.

Once inside the sizeable tiled shower area, inmates stripped off their clothing and placed them into narrow lockers. None had locks on them, and most were old and rusted. Ash eyed him. “Get naked, newbie. This is the only time this week you’ll get a chance to shower.”

“Seriously?”Avery asked before peeling his jumpsuit from his upper body.
