“What have I done with my life? Nothing. You’ve already accomplished so much, more than you were ever expected to—and what happens? You get stuck in here. All I’ve done is wasted my life.”

Guilt smacked Avery in the face. He’s the one who’d put those stupid ideas in his best friend’s head, simply because he’d been jealous of the ease of Brett’s life.

“You’re twenty-three years old. You still have a ton of living to do.”

“And you don’t?”

Avery smiled. “You wastednothing. You’ve been a good friend and confidant for me. Had you not been there, the years at school would’ve been a lot harder.”

He smiled, just barely. “Oh, my parents finally agreed to one last semester. I start after Yule. If I can get my shit together, I could graduate by next summer.”

“Do you have plans to get your shit together?”

“I do,” Brett added with a smile. “I owe it to you.”

“You owe it toyourself.Don’t do this for me,” Avery replied.

“Where’s the guy who fussed about me slacking off? I need him right now.”

“I should’ve never yelled at you. It wasn’t my place. I’m not your parent.” Avery shook his head, the guilt mounting. “I never should’ve made you think your life was a waste. I was wrong. So, so wrong.”

“No… you just cared and wanted to see me succeed.”

“No. I was jealous.”

Brett met his stare.

“I was jealous that you had the freedom I didn’t, and I said those things because of it. I was wrong, Brett. I had no right.”

“Maybe there was jealousy there, but I felt the love, too. You were worried about me. For good reason.” Brett smiled. “I never told you how much I appreciated it. I realized just how much I missed it over the last few weeks without you around.”

Avery smiled weakly. He feared tears would come if he said another word.

“You had every right to feel jealous. Omegas deserve the right to have the same freedoms we do.”

“Thank you,” Avery murmured.

“Hopefully, you’ll be out of here and can come to my graduation in the spring.”

Medjul’s words returned to haunt him. There was no reason to get Brett’s hopes up. “If not, know I’ll be there in spirit.”

Brett placed his palm on the glass. Avery touched his side.

“I love you, Avery. And no,I know…we’re just friends.”

“We’re more than just friends,” Avery murmured. “We’re part of the same clan.Family.”

Brett grinned. “I like that.”

A guard motioned, pointing to his watch, from the corner of Avery’s eye. “I guess visiting hours are over.”

“So soon?” Brett sighed. “I’ll be back to see you again. I promise.”

“I’ll hold you to that.”

“Bye,” Brett said.

“I love you, too.”
