Brett grinned as he hung up his end of the line. Once more he caressed the glass… and was gone.

Avery hung up his phone and wandered toward the doorway leading back inside the guts of the prison. As he was led back through the series of doors, he noticed another guard and prisoner ahead of them. The prisoner was carrying his belongings, just as Avery had not so long ago.

They soon caught up. The prisoner was brought right to the cell Avery shared—likely taking Gideon’s spot. The others were already inside, curious to meet the new addition. The guards departed, locking them in all together.

“Welcome,” Medjul said, introducing himself. He pointed to the others, one after the other. “Ash, Tab, Aiden…” Medjul pointed to Avery. “Avery.”

The prisoner spun, facing him. “Oh,Avery. How lucky we’re here together.” The sheets and pillow were flung to the floor before Tulla’s hands wrapped around his throat. Slammed against the bars, he choked, unable to breathe.

“I told you that you’d be sorry if you opened your big, fucking mouth,”Tulla seethed.

“D-didn’t…” He struggled to say. “Talk.” Avery pulled at Tulla’s strong hands but found no purchase. “Didn’t.”

Ash and Medjul pulled at Tulla’s hands… and seconds later, the guards slid the bars open and dragged them all apart.

“We gonna have to move you, newbie?” one guard asked Tulla.

“No,” Tulla replied, his sugary accent returning. “I think I’ve gotten it out of my system now.”

The guards eyed Avery. “You okay?”

Avery eyed Tulla’s evil smile and knew he should say he wasn’t—but he needed the omega to know he’d not said a word. “Yeah… I’m fine.”

He heard Medjul snort derisively, and the looks on Ash and Tab’s faces were incredulous.

“If we have to break it up again, we’re moving the both of you,” one guard said before shoving Tulla back inside and sliding the door closed.

Avery gasped. He didn’t want to leave the relative safety he felt from his cellmates… well, the ones whohadn’tattempted to choke him to death, that was. Tulla brushed an invisible speck of dust from the front of his jumpsuit and then picked up his blanket and pillow.

“I didn’t say anything, Tulla,” Avery stated again. “They asked. I refused.”

“Your lawyer came to see me. Before the trial,” Tulla replied, his back to Avery. “How’d he know where to come?”

“No idea,” Avery said. “I never told anyone. No one. Not even my family and especially not my attorney.”

Tulla turned to eye him. “Still… you went out there and made a big deal of yourself. Brought unwanted attention. Regardless if you said anything or not, you being caught is the reason I’m here.”

“This the guy who sold you the illegal drugs?” Medjul asked Avery.

Avery didn’t want to answer that, fearful it would push Tulla to violence again.

Medjul narrowed his eyes before glancing at Tulla. “If you were his drug dealer, then I’d sayyouwere the cause of your arrest, not him.”

“If I wanted your opinion—” He chuckled. “I wouldn’t want your opinion. Go fuck yourself.” He scanned the bunks. “Which one is free?”

They all pointed to the very top that had been abandoned by Gideon.

Tulla glanced at Avery. “And you?”

“Just below,” Avery whispered, his throat raw.

“Not anymore,” Tulla said before dragging all of Avery’s belongings to the floor and placing his blanket and pillow there. Before Avery could collect his possessions, Tulla climbed into his new bunk and stretched out. “You’re a youngin’. You can climb up to the nosebleed seats,Abraham.”

Avery glared at Tulla, wishing he’d asked the guards to move the guy. “I’ll move. But you don’t get any more hits in.”

“Ohhh, has that sweet little boy who puked his guts up behind my club found a little bit of courage? Tell me, love… just what do you plan to do to me?”

“Whatweplan to do,” Ash murmured. “He has friends here. You don’t.”
