“Yeah,” Wilder muttered.

“We’re going to do everything we can, Wilder.Everything.”

“Thanks,” Wilder said before hanging up.

Wilder sat staring at his phone, bile rising in his throat.

“Any news from the Green Trust?”

Wilder lifted his gaze. He’d been so lost in thought, he needed a moment to even register Vaughn’s question. “No… nothing yet.”

The meeting had seemed to go well, but the Green Trust’s CEO, Saddler Morgan, was a hard man to read. He’d appeared impressed at times.Slightlyimpressed. Wilder only knew one thing. He wouldn’t want to play the man in a game of poker. Even Vaughn, with his usual charm and charisma, had struggled to get much of a reaction.

“Morgan was a tough nut to crack. It’s been weeks. You’d think they’d have gotten back with us either way.” He sighed. “We might’ve lost this battle.”

“Perhaps.”

Vaughn sat down opposite him. He searched Wilder’s face. “Any news about Avery?”

“His court appearance is soon. I might need you to cover me for a couple of days so I can be there.”

“No problem,” Vaughn replied. “Or…?”

“Or what?”

Vaughn shrugged. “Would you prefer I was therewithyou?”

Wilder shook his head. “I appreciate it… but I think I’d feel better knowing you were here, keeping the ship steady.”

“Okay.” Vaughn was silent a moment.

“Thanks,” Wilder murmured.

“For what?”

“Offering,” Wilder replied. “I’d love you to be there… but…”

“I know. You need me here more.”

“You did well in my absence. I don’t know that I’ve told you that. There were a couple of decisions I don’t know that I would’ve made, but… for the most part, you did great.”

“Thanks,” Vaughn replied with a grin. “Also, I forgot to tell you I got a private detective.”

“For?”

“I used my personal funds, so nothing came across a desk in accounting. He’s tailing Hardwick.”

“Good idea. Any forward momentum in that investigation?”

“Honestly, with trying to cover both desks, I haven’t had the time. I reached out to Reece & White, but they didn’t have space on their schedule for a few more weeks. I’ve looked into the other firms, but none are as reputable as R&W and… I don’t know.”

“We could just wait for Avery’s court date and see what happens.”

“Wild… he’s an omega.”

“And?”

“He can’t work here.”
