“He did a fine job when he was here,” Wilder snapped. “Why shouldn’t he return?”

Vaughn’s eyes went wide. “Because there are laws against it. We can’t legally hire him… and if we used him for the investigation, the judge might refuse our research on those grounds alone.”

“I plan to mate him once he’s free. He’d be free to come into the AQ then.”

“But still not legally hirable,” Vaughn replied.

Wilder growled. “And why not? He’s proved himself capable. He found the issue and was able to narrow it down to a potential embezzler all in the course of a few weeks of employment. No one else did.”

“He got lucky and shredded the wrong document.”

“It was more than luck. It was intelligence and reason and logic…Avery’s incredible, and I won’t have you diminish what he’s done by calling it dumb luck.”

Vaughn lifted his hands in surrender. “Okay… but the law is the law. We can’t hire him to finish this investigation. Wehaveto bring in outside forensic accountants.”

Wilder closed his eyes. The bond he had with Avery stretched thin. Outside sources were dragging them apart, and that bond was ready to snap. No matter how hard he clutched Avery tight, he was losing the battle.

“Fine. Fine… get on the schedule with Reece & White for as soon as possible. We can’t lose momentum on this case.”

“Agreed.” Vaughn slid forward in his seat. “I know you care for him. I meant no disrespect. He’s done a fine job, better than I ever assumed an omega would.”

“We’ve assumed too much and not given omegas the benefit of the doubt. It’s time we did better.” He searched the outer window and the city below. “Weallneed to do better.”

For days,Avery’s cellmates had grown increasingly irritated, barking at one another. Minor spats. Heated arguments. It had taken Avery time to conclude their heats would soon arrive. Without medication. Avery had never experienced a heat without at leastHeat Repressto calm his nerves. He did not know what to expect.

That’s not true. I experienced most of one with Wilder.

Warmth spread through him at the memory. He remembered the feel of Wilder’s powerful hands on him. The feel of his thick cock sliding deep. The lash of the man’s tongue against his shaft.

The bond they’d forged twisting in those sheets.

He’d spent years fighting that connection, railing against it. One heat in Wilder’s bed had opened his eyes to what could be.

The approaching heat—he’d have no Wilder to soothe his need.

Well, I needed to take one full heat off ofHeatex.Silver lining?

Avery couldn’t quite see it as that, not when the only thing they’d have to slake their animal lusts was strangers. Criminals. Men Avery doubted were locked up for little to no reason, like most of his cellmates.

As the full moon approached, Avery realized the coming heat wasn’t affecting him. Hedidn’tgrow irritated. Hedidn’targue or rant. Hedidn’tmasturbate into the quiet hours, seeking solace. When a loud alarm blared and his cellmates lined up, he questioned them.

“It’s time,” Medjul all but moaned, clutching the bars.

It’s time.Horror filled Avery. The moment he’d been terrified of.

“I don’t want to go,” Avery whispered.

“Wehaveto,” Tab said, wiping sweat from his brow. “We have to.”

The bars opened, and the others all but raced into the hall. Avery slid from his bunk and watched with a detached disgust. Inmates all but ran down the hallway, ignoring the cries of the beta guards. Avery hung at the opening of his cell before a guard pushed him in the back with a baton.

“Move along!”

Avery walked toward the back with those who couldn’t run.

Inside the common room, he’d noticed the fencing that had been pushed up against the cement walls, not realizing it would create one large cell of sorts. By the time he reached the outside, he saw omegas peeling their clothing off inside, dropping to their knees, and begging the big, burlynakedalphas held within to breed them.
