“They can’t imprison us,” Lake said. "Protest without a permit is a misdemeanor."

“They shouldn’t, but that doesn’t mean they won’t in this instance,” Wilder replied. “I don’t have time to argue. I need to return.” He eyed Vaughn. “Can you keep them safe until Rohan gets here?”

“Yeah, yeah… of course.” Vaughn opened the door wider. “Come in.”

Lake glanced at Wilder before entering.

Auggie looked up at Wilder. He wrapped his arms around Wilder’s waist and squeezed. “Thanks.”

Wilder smiled. “For what?”

“Making sure we were safe,” Auggie said. He spun and entered Vaughn’s apartment without another word.

“I guess I should go turn on the news and see what’s going on. Who knows? Might get to see my big brother get arrested.”

“Don’t put that voodoo on me,” Wilder said with a grin.

Vaughn smiled. “Be safe.”

“As well as I can.”

Wilder turned and headed back, not sure what he could do to help… but whatever it was, he was going to try.

The following morning, Wilder waded through a pile of reporters standing outside his apartment building, shoving their microphones and recorders into his face. He was able to avoid saying anything but a tossed out“no comment”before he reached for the door handle to his car.

“Are the reports true that you were witnessed assaulting guardsmen last night?”

Wilder paused a moment and looked over his shoulder at Jake Spelling. He narrowed his eyes before slipping into the backseat. He had assaulted no one. He’d simply put himself between the Red Guard and the omegas they were coming after, giving the omegas time to run. Not once had he touched a single person, other than to guide omegas to relative safety.

He scrubbed his face with both hands. He’d had perhaps two hours of sleep before forcing himself vertical. Wilder wanted nothing more than to go back to bed, but he’d avoided work long enough. Once he arrived before the J&A Headquarters, he saw another gaggle of reporters awaiting his arrival. “Take me into the parking garage and drop me off inside,” he told his driver.

“Yes, sir.”

When inside the safety of the garage, he climbed from the back—only to find Jake Spelling awaiting him at the elevator bank. How the fuckhad the man beaten him there?

“I was hoping for a statement?”

“No comment,” Wilder reiterated before tapping the Up button a few times.

“No desire to set me straight? Seems like you were more than prepared to do so the last time we met. But then, that was before his attorney announced Avery was pregnant and you were the father. Seems you left that out of our previous interview. I believe you simply listed yourself as his…employer?”

“Our private lives are none of your business,” Wilder said.

“You were apparently attempting to hide the connection between you and this omega. Why was that?”

Because I didn’t know if it would affect the judge or public opinion in any way.“As I said, no comment.”

“I wonder how innocent you’ll appear once they learn what you did last night. Maybe they’ll strip you of that child after all.”

Rage flew into Wilder. “I didnothinglast night but help.”

“Help omegas escape arrest,” Jake added.

“You really are twisted, aren’t you?” Wilder clenched his fists, moving closer.

Jake’s smile widened. “Go ahead. Give me another story to flash across every screen in the province.”
