When Wilder leaned back, Jake’s eyes glittered with victory. “No wonder you’re willing to go to such extremes. It all makes sense now.” Jake chuckled. “You got one taste of that slick, and he warped your mind.”

He charged Spelling… but stopped short of physical contact. His heart slammed in his chest, and he delighted in the look of terror in Jake’s eyes. The elevator opened with ading, reminding him of where he was… and what he stood to lose. Wilder backed off and swept inside. He slammed the Door Close button and glared at the reporter. “My connection to him doesn’t take a single thing away from the truth of the matter.”

“And what is that truth?”

“That he, like all other omegas, deserves the right to choose their own future.”

“As Avery did? What a choice he made? Getting pregnant by an alpha as the Good Book intended. I bet that’s not what h—”

Thankfully, the doors slid closed before Spelling finished spewing his garbage. Two floors up, Wilder punched the interior of the elevator with every ounce of strength he had, denting the metal wall. Pain coursed through his knuckles, still healing from the last time he wasn't able to hold back his rage. He released a sigh as the elevator swept up to the top floor. It was early enough that he didn’t share it, or get the odd looks he was expecting to receive from his employees.

Wilder’s assistant was sitting behind his desk, typing away. “Good morning, Frey. You’re here early.”

“We’ve gotten a lot of attorneys who've been reaching out since you were on the news. I came in early to listen to all the messages and type up a spreadsheet with all their contact information.”

Wilder smiled, swiping a stack of messages from the corner of his desk. “That was above and beyond. I appreciate it.”

“No problem,” Frey replied. “Can I get you some coffee? Breakfast? Anything?”

“Both would be wonderful. I left early with only a bit of toast. Can you call Martino’s for my usual?”

“Yes, sir.”

Wilder walked toward his office, but paused at the door. Curious, he skirted his assistant’s desk and peered over the man’s shoulder. “How many are we talking?”

“Dozens,” Frey answered. “The calls have been coming in non-stop.”

Wilder’s smile grew. “This is outside the scope of your daily work, you realize.”

His assistant glanced over one shoulder. “Yeah, but I’m more than willing to volunteer my time for this. It’s important.”

“You believe omegas deserve more rights?”

The man blushed. “I do. My papa has been going gaga about you since you showed up on the news. He’s happy… and that makes me happy.”

“You said volunteer,” Wilder said. “As in, off the clock?”

“Yes, sir. I know this isn’t J&A business.”

“I made it J&A business when I said what I said. Adjust your time card for whatever time you came in today… and any extra time you’ve devoted to this.”

“Thank you, sir.”

“Wilder. Call me Wilder.”

“Thank you…Wilder.”

Wilder grinned. “You’ve been here a while. If you want some breakfast, add it to my order, okay?”

Frey beamed. “I will. Thank you.” He glanced down. “Oh no, you’re bleeding.”

Wilder looked at his hand.Fuck.“I’ll go clean this up.”

He walked into the small bathroom adjoining his office and washed the blood away. It appeared he’d opened up two of the cuts that had just healed over. Frey rushed in behind him with a first aid kit.

“Let me see.”

Wilder offered his hand and allowed his assistant to tend to the wound. “This also isn’t in your job description.”
