“Sorry,” Wilder replied. “I can’t say I’ve been sleeping too much myself these days.” His bed seemed too empty. Even though Avery had only shared it a few nights, he belonged there. “I need to come over and see my newest nephew again.” A distraction. He needed as many as he could get before the trial. Before his mind spun on any number of the things that might go wrong.

Rohan smiled. “Gray would love to see you.”

Pain sliced through Avery, awakening him with a vengeance. A heavy weight lay upon him, making it hard to breathe. A blur of movement came from above. He attempted to scream as another stab pierced his stomach, but his lungs wouldn’t cooperate. Gasping for air, the agony took the very breath from his lungs. He lifted his hands to his attacker, fending off another strike. The sharp object sliced through his arm, and he let out a wail. Kicking, he pushed his assailant with all his might. He lacked the strength to move the weight much, but enough for him to roll out of his bunk. He crashed against something or someone, the dim light and the pain causing his world to blur.

Cries and screams surrounded him.

He lowered a hand to his stomach and felt something warm and sticky.

Another scream came to his ears, and it took too long for him to recognize it came from his own lips.

Someone came near to his face, and he waved his hands, attempting to push them away.

“Calm down, Avery…” Hard pressure came against his stomach. “I’ve got to put pressure on the wounds!”

Breathless, Avery sobbed soundlessly. The shakes took over, his body in shock.

“Hold on, Avery… Tab’s calling for the guards. They’re going to help you. It’s okay…breathe…just breathe, my darling.”

Breathing hurt too badly. He drew in quick gasps, but it wasn’t enough. Soon, he was lifted by strong arms and carried through the prison. Each step was excruciating. He bit his lip to prevent screaming. He looked up and saw Remington’s face. He cringed, not wanting that bastard to touch him. “No… no, not you…”

The guard ignored him and kept on walking. Soon, they arrived at the clinic.

“What the hell?!”Doctor Middleton declared as Avery was laid upon a bed within.

“My baby…”Avery whispered, reaching for his stomach.

“I need to see what’s happened…” The doctor cut his jumpsuit, looking over the damage.“Dear Gods…”

Avery remembered little more. Darkness swallowed him.

Wilder’s phone rang.Digging it out from under the piles on his desk, he closed out an email with the other hand. He glanced at the screen, but didn’t recognize the number. “Hello?”

“Avery’s been attacked. You need to get to the prison immediately. It’s bad…”

“Whoisthis?”

The line clicked, and the hum followed. Wilder raced from his desk, ignoring the elevator and taking the stairs two and three at a time. Exploding into the parking garage, he was glad he’d driven himself that day. After sliding behind the wheel of his sports car, he roared out onto the road and quickly dialed Rohan.

“Why did you run out of here?”

“I got a call. They said Avery’s been attacked.”

“From who?”

“No idea. I’m on my way to the prison.”

“Meet you there,” Rohan said before the line went dead.

Wilder forced his way, cutting off traffic and racing through red lights. He narrowly missed a trolley before he came to a screeching halt. The protest had taken up even more space, growing by the day. He pulled up along the curb and wedged himself through the mass of bodies, trying to get to the prison.

People yelled at his intrusion. He practically pushed them out of his way. Others seemed to recognize him and moved to allow him through. Whispers and sprang out around him as they watched him desperately attempting to get to his mate.

“Avery’s been hurt!” a cry came over a bullhorn. “Get out of his way!Get out of his way!”
