Tensen held up a hand.“Still,it would be a conflict of interest. I can reach out to other attorneys I know. We all have a minimum amount of pro bono work the province wants us to take on. This would be an interesting one for the right solicitor.”

“Okay,” Avery said, hoping someone as good as Tensen would jump on the case.

“As far as the others?” Tensen took the five from Lake’s hand. “Consider me retained.”

Avery smiled broadly. “Thank you.”

Tensen focused on Lake. “I’m thirsty… mind grabbing me a drink from one of the vending machines in the hall?”

“Sure thing,” Lake said, rounding the bed.

Tensen handed him the five back. “Anything but low sugar. I need the pep.” He grinned. “And if you want something… a drink or a snack, get it.”

Lake took the five. “But this is your retainer.”

“I received it. Now I’m spending it,” Tensen said, winking. “You keep the change.”

Lake grinned at him. “Thanks.” He put the bill into the pocket of his hoodie before exiting the room.

Tensen turned toward the bed. “Now that we’re alone, I need to remind you that there’s still a Tribunal to come. We’d like to stretch your healing as long as we can… to wait and see what this Omega Bill of Rights looks like. It could strengthen our case.” He glanced over his shoulder, as if to ensure they were still alone. “Technically, you broke these laws before they were changed and the Tribunal can still make an example of you. The provincial government is being forced into changes many weren’t ready for. There might be backlash because of it… and you might be the victim of that backlash.”

Avery nodded, digesting what Tensen said.

The attorney sat back down. “I don’t say this to scare you or destroy all hope. I simply want you mentally prepared for what comes next and to recognize the potential paths you might face. I sent Lake out because I don’t want the boy worrying needlessly about you. Wedon’tknow what’s going to happen next.”

“I appreciate you sending him out. He’s still feeling a bit guilty and thinks all this is his fault. I’ve tried to convince him otherwise, but I see it lingering in his eyes.”

Tensen smiled wanly. “He’s a smart kid, worried about his brother. He’ll be okay once this is all over with. Just give him time.”

Avery sighed. “I also appreciate you not sugar-coating things for me. I need to know the truth, not have my head filled with lies. I’m sure another attorney would’ve treated me as if I was less capable of understanding.”

The hospital door opened, but instead of Lake, it was Wilder behind it. His stare met Avery’s, and a warm smile spread across his lips. Avery’s heartbeat quickened, and a smile came to his lips.

Wilder eyed Tensen and frowned. “Anything I need to know?”

“Just prepping our patient for what comes next,” Tensen said, closing his folder and shoving it in his satchel. “I’ll let you two have some alone time. You’ve been waiting for a long time to have it.”

“I would like any news before you go,” Wilder said to the attorney. He lifted a drink can in one hand. “Lake said this was yours.”

“Thank you,” Tensen said, grabbing his drink.

“Tensen is busy. I can share everything with you,” Avery said.

After.

After Wilder slid into the bed beside him and held him close.

He was starving for the man’s attention.

Tensen eyed them both before rising. “If you still have questions later, just call me.” He clapped Wilder on the shoulder. “Be with your omega right now.”

Wilder held Avery’s stare, heat firing in his eyes.

They were soon left alone.

Wilder’s hands gripped the end of the bedframe. “I sent Lake home, by the way. My driver was downstairs. Sorry if it’s a little selfish, but I wanted to spend a little alone time with my omega.”

“Lake and I have had a pleasant talk while he was here. I think I’m ready for you to be selfish now.” More than ready.
