Yet Wilder hung there at the end of his bed, staring.

Wanting.

Avery’s breath came faster, his chest tight with anticipation. All the years of forbidden desire had developed into months of confinement that forced them apart. They were finally free… perhaps only for a short time… but they were free.

Free to cling to one another.

Free to love one another.

Why won’t he move?

“I want to climb into that bed with you, but I’m terrified I’ll hurt you,” Wilder mumbled.

“You won’t. And if you do, I’ll tell you to stop,” Avery said. “Come here.Please.”

Wilder was at his side in an instant. His alpha carefully slid beside him, offering the warmth and comfort he’d ached for. He cuddled into his alpha’s embrace.

“You’re okay?”

Avery nodded, his face inches from Wilder’s. “Yep. Now, kiss me. Like your life depends on it.”

Wilder chuckled before sliding a hand through the back of Avery’s hair. He dragged Avery’s face closer, the warm heat of his breath washing over seconds before the alpha claimed his lips in a kiss so fierce it took Avery’s breath away. Tingling all over, Avery sighed against Wilder’s lips, tasting the man’s honeyed mouth and melting against his alpha’s frame.

When they parted, Avery met his gaze, a hint of a smile on his lips. “I’ve been wanting that for a long time now.”

“Oh?”

“I barely remember the ones from my heat. The last completely coherent kiss was when I graduated. Months and months ago. It feels like years.”

Wilder tucked his thumb under Avery’s chin and lifted. “Then I better remind you some more.”

“Yes, please d—”

The next kiss cut him off… and the one that followed had him moaning with need. Avery wasn’t sure how long they lay there, cuddling, kissing and sharing the simple intimacies they’d long been denied. Avery grew too excited and moved in closer—but a pang of pain sliced through him. He let out a cry, and Wilder froze.

“We should slow things down,” Wilder said. “You need to heal so we can enjoy this all the sooner.”

Avery chuckled through the pain. It ebbed quickly after he readjusted slightly.

Wilder tucked Avery’s head under his chin and leaned back into the bed. “Can I just hold you for a while?”

“How about forever?” Avery murmured, inhaling his alpha’s warm scent.

“Forever sounds good to me.”

They lay in companionable silence for a couple of minutes.

“Hey, Wilder?”

“Yeah, baby?”

“Didn’t you have a beard earlier? I wasn’t completely coherent, but I seem to remember a beard.”

“Yes, I did… but I shaved it off before my board meeting.”

“Where you nearly lost your job,” Avery added.

“But I didn’t. If you want me to grow one, I will. Just for you.”
