Wilder lifted him onto the bathroom counter, pressing between his legs. Avery could feel the thick imprint of his alpha’s hard cock and cried out with need. Slick dribbled from his ass, his body more than ready to take that shaft.

“I want you,” Wilder growled, capturing his head in both hands.

Avery sighed. “We only have a little time… but we can be quick. Or we can finish this in the car on the way?”

Wilder growled and took a half step back. “I’m sorry… I crossed the line. Not until the doctor approves you for regular activity.”

Avery groaned in disapproval. “Come on… I’mgoingto be approved!”

“Yes, you’re clearly ready,” Wilder mused.

“And you’re not?”

“I…wasn’t hurt,” Wilder clarified before his face darkened. He moved in closer, caressing Avery’s belly. “There’s something we haven’t talked about.”

Avery searched Wilder’s dark expression, trepidation pervading his thoughts. “And that is?”

“When you were in the hospital, you seemed concerned for the babe. I guess I allowed that to answer the questions I’d been having instead of asking you directly. Asking would’ve been harder… and the replies might not have been what I wanted to hear.”

“I don’t understand?”

Wilder met his gaze. “You wanted a career. With the new laws they’re putting to Congress, you might have the chance to do as you wished once you’re free.”

“And?”

“How does an alpha and a babe fit into those plans? You didn’t want this life… and to be honest, I didn’t want it either.”

Avery reached out to Wilder’s shoulders and drew his alpha closer. “I do still want a career, if I’m able. If I’m free to do so.” He smiled. “We’ll make it work.”

“Because you have to… or because you want to?”

“Because Iwantto. With all my heart.”

A hint of a smile came to Wilder’s lips. “You’re not just saying that, are you?”

“Let me ask you? You just said you didn’t think you wanted it. Now you do? Because you feel forced into a relationship with me?”

“No!”He rested his forehead on Avery’s. “I always imagined having an omega would be an inconvenience. That I’d have to change everything and make room. I was wrong.”

Avery pulled his head back so he could see Wilder’s face.

“I was so very wrong. I mean, everythingdidchange, but…” Wilder paused, smiling. “You’re my world now. My reason to get up in the morning and the last thing I think about when I close my eyes. I’m obsessed… nearly every minute of the day you come to my mind and I smile, wanting to reach out and touch you. Hear your voice. Know that you’re safe and happy.” Wilder tilted his head. “All that other stuff comes in second.”

Overwhelmed with emotion, Avery was at a loss for words. His heart overrode his mind.

Wilder’s smile faltered. “You… don’t feel the same.”

Avery snagged Wilder’s hands and dragged his alpha against him. “I do.” He captured Wilder’s lips and kissed him with all the emotion his words could never rival. When they parted, breathless, he smiled, relishing the kiss-drunk expression on Wilder’s face, hoping he wore the same. “I don’t know that I have the power to put into words what I put into that kiss.”

“I need to know… that you truly want us,” Wilder murmured.

“I want…” Tears stung the backs of his eyes. “I want it all. I want the career and the freedoms… but I also want you and this babe with a desire stronger than any I’ve had before. I, too, can’t imagine you not in my life, not now, not after everything we’ve been through to get here.” Grief struck. “But we might be soon parted.”

“No… not now,” Wilder said, before kissing him into silence.

Their lips parted, and Avery slid into his alpha’s firm embrace, simply holding on and hoping they could stay like that forever.

“You need to get dressed,” Wilder whispered before stepping back. He offered a hand to help Avery down off the counter.
