“How dare you leave me,” Avery whined before taking his alpha’s hand.

Wilder swatted his ass as he passed. “Soon, you’ll be back in my arms, my darling. But the doctor first.”

“Fine,” Avery muttered before padding into the bedroom to dress.

Later that day, Wilder clung to Avery’s side as the doctor checked over his omega’s wounds.

“You’ve healed extremely well,” Avery’s new physician, Dr. Mountbatten, announced. “Better than I expected.” He offered a hand and helped Avery to a sitting position. “There’s no pain when you move or stretch?”

“A little stiffness, but no pain,” Avery answered.

“Physical therapy’s going well?”

“Yep… though I assume he’s trying to wear me out. I’ve never worked some of these muscles before. Didn’t realize I evenhadthem.”

Dr. Mountbatten chuckled. “He’s simply trying to strengthen lesser used muscles so they can share a little more of the load, which is good with the baby to come. You’ll likely appreciate him more after childbirth when you make it through like a champ. That is, if you continue the exercises after he’s gone.”

The doctor took a seat and entered a bit of data into his laptop. “You’ve got a new obstetrician, correct?”

“Yes. I have my first appointment there later this week.”

Dr. Mountbatten crossed one long leg over the other and focused on Avery. “So, the body’s good and being taken care of. What about the mind?”

Avery frowned. “What about it?”

The doctor scoffed.“Avery…you were attacked. No nightmares? No panic attacks?”

Wilder leaned forward. He had noticed no behavior outside the ordinary, but also hadn’t thought to ask. He should have. All he’d been able to focus on was having his omega safe and under his protection.

Avery shook his head. “Honestly, I suspected Vero was suffering and worried about his mental health from day one. I’ve been able to separate my feelings from the act and see it for what it was. An abused omega sent over the edge. He’s as much a victim as I am.” He linked his fingers through Wilder’s. Wilder searched Avery’s expression, contemplating the veracity of those claims. Avery smiled and turned his focus to the doctor. “Plus, I’m sure being with my alpha has allowed me a comfort and a safety I didn’t have in there, too. No nightmares. No panic attacks. If that changes, I’ll ask for help.”

“Promise?” Wilder asked.

Avery met his stare. “Promise.”

“I’m glad you’re handling this so well, but if that ever changes, I’m going to give you the number of a colleague who I believe could give you the help you’d need. Just in case, okay?”

Avery nodded.

The doctor smiled. “Any questions for me?”

“Am I okay to return to regular activity?”

“You are.”

“And that means?” Avery asked, his face growing red.

“That you and your alpha are free to enjoy private time together all you wish. I would take it a little easy with the baby. If anything feels uncomfortable, stop and try another position or act, okay? And that goes for your wounds, too. Don’t do it if it hurts.” The doctor grinned. “Even if you enjoy that sort of thing… use some common sense and don’t put your healing or the babe at risk.”

Avery looked down, his face red with embarrassment.

“Unless you have any more questions, I think we’re done here,” Dr. Mountbatten said. “You, Wilder?”

“Will his wounds impact the growth of the baby? Or will the growth of the baby impact his healing?”

“No, to both… if he was farther along in the pregnancy, perhaps, but he’s just barely showing. He’s doing well and as his stomach swells, he should be healed enough and in good shape for that. The babe won’t be affected at all.”
