“Oh?”

“The Dean of Students has submitted my application for an internship with Reece and White.”

Gray lifted a brow. He didn’t look happy, though. “I think I recognize the name.”

“The best accounting firm in the province—and the internship would be in the elite forensic accounting department,” Avery smiled, excitement racing through him.

Gray didn’t return his smile. He was quiet for a moment before looking at Avery. “I thought we’d agreed you’d go to work at Jaymes & Associates?”

Avery clenched his teeth. “No. That wasyourplan.”

Gray stepped in closer. “Avery… you’ll be going to work in the Alpha Quadrant. What if the drugs fail you? What if something happens? You’ll need Rohan close to protect you.”

“The medicines work fine. I’ve been in and out of the Alpha Quad without issue. I don’t need Rohan to babysit me.” He said all that as another drop of his slick eased from his body, coming to the conclusion that the drugs weren’t as foolproof as he’d let on.

Gray was silent, his face ashen. “I need to sit down.”

Avery snatched Jasyn from his arms, and the boy awoke immediately, crying out. Jasyn rubbed his eyes with fat little fists before sobbing for his papa. Avery held tight, trying to calm the babe. As they walked, he noticed Gray seemed shaky and reached out to steady the man. “Are you well?”

“I’m fine,” Gray murmured, but Avery noticed how tightly his uncle held onto his arm. “This baby’s just taking it out of me.”

Four babes in four years. Many omegas struggled to have a single child. Gray was pushing his body and his health—and potentially, his luck—and they all knew it. Avery led Gray to one of the four patio tables littered around the yard and made sure he sat in the shade. “Youneedto rest.” Avery dragged another chair closer and urged his uncle’s feet into it. “You can lead the party from here, Your Majesty.”

Just then, Gray’s manservant appeared. “We’re all set in the sunroom. Can I bring you some refreshment, sir?”

“That would bewonderful,” Gray answered.

Rohan arrived, a worried look on his face. He knelt beside Gray’s chair. “Are you unwell?”

“Just tired,” Gray said, forcing a smile.

Rohan carefully extracted Jaysn from Avery’s arms. The infant curled into his father’s embrace. “Is it too hot out here? Do you want to go in and prop your feet up inside?”

“I’m fine here in the shade. The breeze is nice,” Gray said. “Henry’s getting me something to drink.”

“Good.” Rohan rose and waved the manny over. “Gray needs to rest for a while… and I need to watch over the party. Can you watch over Jasyn? See if you can get him to finish his nap inside?”

The beta smiled widely. “My pleasure,” he said before taking the child into his arms. Jasyn rested his head on the manny’s shoulder, his lids heavy.

“I’ll watch the twins,” Rohan looked around. “Where’s Silver?”

“I sent him inside with Lake to wash his hands. They should be back by now,” Gray said, searching the large yard. “There they are… over by the train ride.”

“Wilder and I will keep the children entertained. You rest, my love.” Rohan leaned in to press a gentle kiss to Gray’s lips. After he stepped back, he turned to Avery. “Stay with him, hmm? Make sure he’s okay?”

“Of course,” Avery said, turning to see Wilder was nearby.

The heat in Wilder’s stare nearly took his breath away, and he felt another little of his slick ease out.

Wilder’s eyes widened, and Avery saw the alpha inhale…

He froze, terrified he’d just been caught.

Iwanthim to catch me.

That thought twisted in his gut.

Need rippled through Avery… the thought of being claimed by the big, gorgeous alpha… of being pinned down to the ground and roughly claimed… it was all he could imagine.
