Wilder stared.

His sizable hands fisted on either side.

Hands Avery had fantasized about on so many nights. Dragging through his hair, forcing him down to the sheets, sliding into his slickened ass…

Hands he sensed could bring such pleasure…

How many nights had he sated himself with one of the big dildos to get through his heats, pretending it was Wilder fucking him? How many times had he thought to throw away everything he’d worked for in order to have one night of pleasure in Wilder’s bed?

Maybe this was that moment… fate intervening and forcing him to accept his alpha, no matter the plans he had.

No, I can’t let him find out the truth.

When Wilder finally turned and walked away, a painful ache throbbed through him. Simple chemistry had bound them as a pair.Chemistry.It wasn’t love, he reminded himself. It was pure, unadulterated lust, and Avery wouldn’t give up on his dreams for that—no matter how much he wanted to lie screaming and writhing under Wilder’s powerful body.

He dragged his gaze, and then his body, away from the magnetic pull that was Wilder Jaymes.

Avery sat down beside his uncle and watched the party from afar, trying his best to ignore the one man who could ruin him in more ways than one.

“So tell me more about this job of yours,” Gray said once they were alone again.

“Internship,” Avery corrected. “Unpaid.”

“Unpaid?” Gray blinked a few times, silent. “The point of college was to land a job and make money. Now you’re going to take a job where you’re working for free?”

“It’s a way to get my foot in the door.” Avery sensed his ears turning red. “Now that Lake and Auggie are living here, I’ve got a little space where I can do it. This job is the one I want. Forensic accounting is my dream.”

“No pay and no protection? I don’t like it.” Gray scoffed. “I know you want to prove something to the world… but can’t you do thatandprotect yourself from harm?” Gray sighed. “You’re endangering yourself every day as it is. Please… think this through.”

Avery knew Gray had a point. Working in the AQ would be dangerous. Scarily so. He wasn’t without his own fears. “There’s no guarantee I’ll get the job. Maybe I won’t.”

Gray was silent.

Avery knew he would take the interview, if it came. Even if he didn’t accept the job, he needed to know he could get the job. On his own merit.

But then, if he got it—could he refuse?

Not hardly.

Would he be any safer at Jaymes & Associates? It would put him under the same roof as Wilder. His gaze went to the alpha again, his heartbeat quickening once more.

When the alpha caught his stare, Avery knew it would be a mistake to work there. He needed space away from Wilder Jaymes.

Far, far away.

A few hours later…

Wilder stood before the window in Rohan’s home office, watching as Abraham slid into the back of a black sedan outside—the car that usually shuttled Gray and the children around the province. The urge to go out and drag the beta out of the car and take him home roared in his blood. Ignoring that insanity with every molecule within, Wilder turned to where Rohan sat behind the enormous mahogany desk.

“Have you been listening toanythingI’ve been saying?”

Wilder froze, realizing he hadn’t. “No. Sorry.”

Rohan’s eyes narrowed. “A job? For Abraham?”

Wilder tensed. “What?”
