Avery grinned, but tried to hide it. Chef scowled, but continued reviewing the dishes.

“How was the party?” Brett whispered once the man continued to speak.

“Good.”

“Save me some cake?”

“Of course. It’s in my locker,” he whispered back. He turned to look at Brett’s profile. “We friends again?”

Brett laughed. “As long as there’s cake.”

Chef glared at them again before their boss, Pierce Lambeau, stepped in. “Okay, guys. You can run your mouths while you’re prepping the dining room. Let Chef do the run-down so we can get started.”

Haughty, Chef replied,“thank you,”to Pierce before continuing again.

Brett turned and rolled his eyes, causing Avery to laugh—which got them their third glare. Chef finished the review of the dishes before Pierce took over. “We have three VIP tables coming tonight. I had planned on Abraham taking all three, but considering his inability to remain serious tonight, perhaps I should appoint the task to someone else?”

Avery stood up straighter. “No, sorry. I can handle the VIPs.”

“Good,” the alpha said, glaring at him. He ran through a few more instructions before turning back to them. “Brett, you’re helping at the bar tonight.”

Brett scoffed. “Bar? I’ve never bartended.”

“We’re down a bar back an—”

“You want me to be a bar back?” Brett cried. Bar backs were one step above dishwashers and one step below runners in their hierarchy. Both of them had started as runners and worked their way up the food chain.

What had Brett done to piss Pierce off?

“If you’d let me finish?” Pierce asked, glaring at Brett. “We’re down a bar backandSalvatore said dinner orders at the bar have been on the rise, especially on the weekends. It’s been hard for him to do all three. So, you take care of all the food orders and maybe you can help him here and there in between with basic drinks. We have Josiah here tonight. He can do most of Salvatore’s running. We’ll train him as a bar back starting tonight.”

“Fine,” Brett said.

“If it works out, we might start putting a server at the bar on the weekends,” Pierce said.

The entire staff grumbled.

“Hey, if you guys trained to mix drinks, you might make better tips than waiting tables,” Salvatore, the head bartender, called out.

Avery eyed Brett, and they both shrugged.

“I’m out of here soon, so doesn’t really matter to me,” Avery added.

“Another dig about being left behind?” Brett spat.

“No,” Avery said. “I wasn’t rubbing salt in the wound.”

“Okay, folks,” Pierce announced, getting their attention. “Let’s finish prep and everyone… have a great night.”

The front of the house staff dispersed, leaving the kitchen en masse. Avery headed for the double doors, ready to check the VIP dining rooms.

“Abe? A minute?”

Avery turned to Pierce. He walked over, worried he might be in a bit of hot water. “Sorry I was late. I was at my cousins’ birthday party this afternoon and wasn’t paying as close attention to the time. It won’t happen again.”I would’ve been on time had it not been for my need for a shower.

“I didn’t call you over to yell at you for being late,” the alpha said, chuckling. “I think this might be the first time in the three years you’ve been working here, and it was only a few minutes. I think I can recover from that.”

“Oh… well, I just assumed.”
