“I wanted to reiterate the offer I made, asking you to stay on. Hopefully you’ve been thinking about it?”

Avery winced. The offer was appreciated, but not what he’d wanted to do with the rest of his life. “I love it here… and I value the fact you want me to stay… but I need to use this degree I’ve worked so hard to get.”

“What if I made you my full-time bookkeeper?”

“You and I both know you don’tneeda full-time bookkeeper,” Avery said. “It would be twenty hours a week, at most.”

Pierce lifted his chin. “Part-time bookkeeper…andassistant manager?”

Avery laughed. “I think I know the perfect person to replace me.”

“If you say Brett again, I might have to put my foot up your ass,” Pierce growled.

“I know he’s not always… serious… but heisworking on a degree in accounting. I think it would do him just as well as it would you. Some real responsibility might be exactly what the doctor ordered for him.”

Pierce winced. “And in the meantime, I’m just supposed to hope he doesn’t steal all my money and go buy a big, fancy sports car? Because that’s more on brand for Brett.”

“He has a sizeable trust coming, as far as I know. He doesn’t need to steal your money.”

Pierce sighed, shaking his head. After a moment, he turned to Avery. “How long can I keep you?”

“I don’t have concrete plans yet, but I have several strong opportunities.” He paused, trying to find the ‘something’ that would make Pierce say yes. “I promise to stay on past a two-week’s notice, continue to do the books—if you let me train Brett to do them with me. I promise to be honest with you. If he’s not going to work out, Iwilltell you to hire someone elseandI’ll continue coming in until you find that someone.”

Pierce perked up some. “Andtrain the new person, too?”

“Yes,” Avery answered, knowing he might work two jobs for months on end. But then, it wasn’t much different from the crazy pace of working near full-time and carrying a full load of classes. “But once I get hired elsewhere, I won’t have time to wait tables, too. Just the bookkeeping.”

“Understood,” Pierce said, offering a hand. “I can live with those terms, as long as you’re honest about Brett.”

“Absolutely. Iwon’tleave you hanging.”

“Good man,” Pierce said, releasing his hand. “If only I had a staff full of Abrahams. Then I’d be set forever.”

Avery smiled. If only his alpha boss knew he was an omega. He wondered if the man would want that staff full of Averys. He headed out into the dining room and saw Brett behind the bar. Sidling up, he smiled. “Guess who’s agreed to give you a shot at the books?”

Brett paused. “Did you have to suck his dick to get him to agree to that?”

Avery lifted a brow. “No, but you might have to.”

Brett’s face grew deep red, and Avery’s eyes widened. “I don’t think I’veeverseen you embarrassed. Overanything.” A thought suddenly hit him. “You have a thing for Pierce?”

“No. Idon’t,” Brett spat, looking away. He dumped a bucket of ice into the bin, ignoring Avery before dropping the empty bucket violently on the floor.

“If you didn’t, you’d blow me off with a joke. Versus getting angry.”

Brett rolled his eyes. “I told you I didn’t need someone looking out for me, yet here you are, doing it. Again.” He lifted his chin. “That’swhy I’m mad.”

Avery paused, realizing he had done it again. “Sorry… I’m just used to…”

“Fixing me.”

“Not necessarily fixing. I’m just used to being the responsible one. Taking care of everyone else…” He sighed. “I was in your position just this afternoon, with my uncle worrying over me. I hated it. I’m sorry—I’ll back off.”

Brett dumped the bucket of ice into the bin behind the bar. “You’ve already promised that.”

“I swear,” Avery added. “I’ll do better.”

“Good.”
