Page 42 of His Reluctant Omega

He quickened his pace.

They did, too.

His heartbeat slammed in his ears, terror making it harder to breathe. He ran, eating up the yards between him and safety. Casting a look behind him, he saw the alphas pick up their pace… and another had joined their ranks.

Fuck!

He turned the corner and bolted toward Rohan, who was waving his way. A big, black car was parked in front of him. Rohan seemed to look past him, perhaps at the alphas coming his way.

Avery stopped inches from Rohan—who said nothing, only shoved him into the back of the black car and slammed the door. A slap came to the top of it, and the car took off.

“No worries. You’ll be home soon,” the driver said, searching his face through the rearview mirror.

“Thank you,” Avery all but whispered as he caught his breath, his heart still pumping madly. Sweat dotted his brow, and his hands shook. He’d never been in danger before… not like that.

What the hell am I doing? Am I nuts?

It was the first time he’d second-guessed his decision… not since the moment he cut his hair and became Abraham Norcross. He lifted his gaze and saw the curious driver looking at him through the mirror once more.

He knows.

With the flick of his wrist and press of a button, Avery slid the partition up between them, giving him solitude and a barrier to the driver’s keen interest. As the miles passed and he grew closer to the walled protection of the Omega Quadrant, a small part of him realized what the elders had attempted to do with those safety measures.

What he’d always seen as a prison had been intended to keep them safe.

Yet knowing that there were drugs that could do the same without keeping them prisoner was hard knowledge to hold on to without screaming it to the whole province.

Although… those drugs were suddenly failing him.

In a matter of days, he’d be graduating and ready to head out into the alpha world. Could he do that now?

Safely?

His phone buzzed in his pocket. Before he lifted the surface, he sensed who was on the other end. “Hey, Uncle Gray.”

“Do you see why I’m scared?! Do you?!”

Avery closed his eyes, knowing his choice had just been made for him. “I should’ve taken another pill with me.”

“I thought those pills of yours stopped that?”

“Not completely. I was stuck at the interview for longer than I expected. If I’d had another pill with me, I would’ve been fine,” he replied wondering if he was lying to Gray—or himself.

“Keep them on you from now on. Understood?”

“Yes, sir,” he murmured.

More slick eased from him. He squirmed on the leather seat, his body in torment.

“I really think you should forgo this other job and work where Rohan is near and can help you.”

“That would be worse,” he muttered.

“Why?”

Because Wilder is there.“I don’t need a babysitter.”

“Apparentlyyou do!”
