“I don’t know that I’ll get the internship. There’s no point in getting ahead of ourselves,” Avery said, trying to put an end to the argument. He was exhausted and simply wanted to go home.

Gray sighed from the other end. “I have enough to worry about right now, Avery. Please, don’t put yourself in any more danger than you have to. With Rohan at J&A, he can be there if something goes wrong. Like he was today. Who knows if you’d get there in time if this happened again?”

His uncle had a point.

“I’ll consider it.”

“Avery…”

“I hear you. Today scared me, too. Just give me a little time to get over the anxiety of what happened, please.”

“I love you, Avery. I’m simply worried.”

“I know. I understand that. I’m worried, too.”

His uncle clicked his tongue. “Good. That worry just might save your life.”

“Knock, knock.”

Wilder lifted his head from the Green Trust investigation data his team had drawn up for him and saw Gray standing at his office door. Glancing at his watch, he saw it was well past closing time. He jumped up and crossed his office, offering Gray a big hug. “Hey there. What do I owe the pleasure of a visit?”

He led Gray to a chair in his office.

“Rohan and I are supposed to have a date tonight, but he was running late, so I opted to meet him here.”

He hooked a hip on the side of his desk. “Date night, hmm? Where are you going?”

“Well, probably not a night of dancing, but I’m sure there’s good food involved. It was Rohan’s turn to surprise me.”

Wilder grinned. “I’m glad you two carve out time to be alone together. I’m sure that’s important in a house brimming with kids.”

“Oh, you just don’t know,” Gray said with a chuckle. “I thought I’d also stop in for two more reasons. First off, to thank you for helping with getting Abraham a job here. It’ll put my mind at ease knowing Rohan’s looking out for him.”

“Don’t mention it—although, I don’t think Abe’s accepted it.”

“Yet,” Gray replied firmly. “Not yet.”

Wilder frowned. Did Abraham not want the job?

“And second,” Gray continued. “I’d like to invite you to Abe’s graduation.”

Wilder frowned again. “Uh… isn’t that morefor family?”

“I realize we’re not blood related… but I’m also aware of what Jamie asked of you. Looking out for Rohan and I after he was gone couldn’t have been easy on you. You’ve stepped up in numerous ways and even became an uncle to our children… that makesyoufamily.”

The sides of Wilder’s lips curled. Considering how orphaned he felt those days, it was nice he had somewhere to go to feel like one of the tribe. “I appreciate that… but how would Abe feel if I showed up?”

“He’d love it,” Gray said. “We’re having a small party at our house after. A few of Abe’s school friends and the rest of us. Youhaveto be there. Silver and Jaymes miss their Uncle Wild.”

“Okay, okay,” Wilder murmured, his hands up in mock surrender. “When and where?”

Gray dragged a pamphlet from his inside breast pocket. “This is your ticket. They printed all the details on there.Waltyn & Marrisis a huge school, so they’re having it at the Bachmann Auditorium this year. You can just follow us over to our house when it’s over.”

The prospect of seeing Abraham crossing that stage—such a huge moment in his life—that was appealing.

Gray held his stare, silent a moment. There was a secret behind his eyes, as if he knew something Wilder didn’t.
