Page 59 of His Reluctant Omega

Avery’s mind lingered over the caress of the alpha’s hand along his shaft. The gentleness he hadn’t expected. The hardness where it mattered.

He couldn’t choose a job because of a man.

But this wasn’t any other man. It was his alpha.

His safety was also a concern. Rohan would protect him…

As would Wilder, he presumed. If push came to shove.

Maybe I should be worried about being protectedfromhim.

“Abraham…? Abraham? Are you there?”

“I’m afraid I’ve accepted another position.” His chest clenched, pain lancing through him. He held back a sob. “I appreciate the offer, but Ican’taccept.”

“I’m… I’m so sorry to hear that,” Mr. Reece replied, seemingly stunned at the refusal. “Is there nothing I can do to dissuade you from taking that?”

“I… I’m afraid not.”

“Okay then. I’m sorry to hear this. Have a good day.”

“You, too,” Avery mumbled before clicking off the call. While the phone was in his hand, he dialed the number of J&A Human Resources. They answered on the third ring. “Yes, this is Abraham Norcross. I was calling to accept the position in Accounts Receivable that I was offered.” He nodded, listening to the beta drone on about coming in to sign documents and go through a short orientation seminar.

“If you come in today or tomorrow, you can start Monday,” the human resources manager mentioned.

“Sure,” Avery replied, ambivalent. A job was a job was a job, right? It would get him out of the omega quadrant. An income, since it wasn’t an internship.

The freedom he wanted all along. That’s all that mattered.

Right?

“Mr. Jaymes?”

Wilder lifted his gaze to the doorway. A slight beta stood within the frame, one hand still lifting to knock on the door.

“Yes?”

“I’m Montgomery from HR. I know you’ve been inquiring about the job offer given to Mr. Norcross. I thought I’d come up to let you know he just called to accept the position. He’s coming today or tomorrow for his orientation and will start his first day of work Monday.”

A sense of relief filled Wilder. “Good,” he said, feigning indifference. “Thank you for letting me know.”

“Of course, Mr. Jaymes.”

The beta disappeared, and his new executive assistant, Frey, soon filled the space. “He said you’d want to know. Was that okay to let him in?”

Wilder nodded. “It was fine today. Next time, just take a message.”

“Yes, sir,” Frey replied. “Anything else I can assist you with?”

“Yes, I need the reports from the Green Trust as soon as they arrive. And get me Myke Pyrri on the line, please.”

“Yes, sir.”

Wilder leaned back in his chair, a wide smile crossing his lips.

Good choice, Avery.
