Avery nodded and chose his side, too. Soon, they were alone again.

Awkward silence fell between them.

“I’m still waiting for my answer,” Wilder said.

Avery toyed with the condensation on the water glass before him. “And as I said… I’vealreadyanswered.”

“You refused an internship for a job you clearly wanted… so you could be closer to…Rohan?”

Avery met Wilder’s stare.

“Or was it so you could be closer to me?”

Heat saturated Avery’s face.“My gods, you’ve got an ego on you.”

“From that hint of a blush on your face, I think I might be closer to the mark.” Wilder paused a second, his stare overwhelming. “I know I’d consider it if the roles were reversed. If I could spend my days near you, I’d make that choice in a heartbeat.”

His words were all Avery’s body needed for the fire to burn within. A bead of slick eased from him… and he realized what a mistake it was to have gone out alone with the very man who might ruin everything.

Wilder’s nostrils flared before he took a deep inhale.

Surrender.Avery shot from his chair, searching for an escape.

“Abraham?”

Noting the sign for the restrooms, Avery raced from the table, passing curious onlookers.

He slammed the stall door behind him, clicked the lock, and sank onto the toilet. Before he had more than two seconds to breathe, the outer bathroom door swung open.

“Abraham? Are you alright?”

“I’m fine,” Avery replied, his voice too high.

“Are… are you sure?”

“I’ve…” Avery closed his eyes, embarrassment growing into illness. His stomach clenched. He rested his forehead against his palm. “I’ve not been feeling well today. All the nerves about Hardwick, I’m sure.”

Wilder was silent for a moment. “Perhaps we should get you home, then?”

“Yeah… yes, please. Just give me a minute, okay?”

“Sure. I’ll meet you back at the table and we can get you home.”

Left alone, Avery’s heart beat madly in his chest. Sweat glimmered at his nape and hairline. How the hell was he supposed to work in close proximity to his alpha? Especially when his alpha wasflirtingwith him?

Flirting? That was something far past flirting. It was an open invitation.

An invitation I yearn to take.

He shook his head. This will not work. I can’t do this.

What the hell am I supposed to do about it? I agreed to help… I can’t back out now.

After cleaning himself up a bit, he returned to the table—unable to face Wilder.

“I’m having them box up our lunches to go. I’ll have my car take you home. Okay?”

“I don’t feel hungry anymore,” Avery whispered.
