“You knew Avery was with me.”

“Your text was inadequate, and you know it!” Rohan shook his head. “I came to your apartment. Banged on the door.” His face grew red. “Heard the noises inside and assumed that’s what happened.”

“Avery went into heat at the office. He’s an omega… and… nature took its course. I took him home with me after to keep him safe.”

Rohan didn’t appear shocked to hear the news about Avery.

“So, you knew? That he was an omega?”

“Of course I knew,”Rohan growled under his breath.

“And you never warned me?”

Guilt flashed over Rohan’s features. “I promised Gray I would protect the boy as much as I could. He was already in school by the time I found out. What choice did I have? Avery was deadset on his path, and it’s not like I would turn him in. I figured it was best to stay quiet.”

“You could’ve toldme. You knew I felt a pull.” Wilder scrubbed his hands over his face. “I could’ve protected him.”

“It’s too late for would have and could have. How did the Guard get involved?”

“I have no idea. They knocked on the door as we were coming out of the heat.” A thought came to him. The only other person who knew Avery was in heat was…

“Vaughn. Thatbastard!”

Half of Wilder wanted to find his brother and beat the guy into the ground… while the other half couldn’t leave his omega alone. Not that Avery knew he was out there. Yet being close was somehow better than not.

“What do we do?”

“I don’t have experience in omega or family law. I studied corporate law.” Rohan scratched his chin. Nearly a minute passed before Rohan gave a knowing look. “But I know someone who does.” He reached into his pants pocket and pulled out his phone, dialing a number before lifting it to his ear. “I’m sorry to bother you at this late hour, but I have an emergency. Gray’s nephew was arrested. Yes, yes… an omega. My knowledge of omega and family law is lacking, and I could use some insight.”

Wilder could only stand back and listen. Rage swam in his veins without an outlet or means to fix their problem. He was powerless, and that only caused more rage to swell. He paced a few feet and back, fists clenched as he picked up on pieces of Rohan’s conversation.

Rohan ended the call. “There’s no attorney allowed in for the initial reading of the charges. Abraham…” Rohan sighed.“Averywill be placed in a surrogacy prison awaiting trial. We won’t be able to visit or speak to him until the morning.”

“No bond?”

“Omega courts are different,” Rohan answered.

“An alpha has the right to be freed awaiting trial. Bond, isn’t it?”

“An omega is a protected entity in the eyes of the law. They’reimprisonedfor their safety.” Rohan shook his head. “It’s a shit system, I know, but there’s nothing we can do about it tonight.”

“So… he’s guilty until proven innocent?”

“Sadly, yes,” Rohan said. “They keep omegas behind bars from the start. It’s the way it’s always been for them.”

“Doesn’t make it right.”

“I’m not arguing that,” Rohan said.

“I’m his alpha… they could release him to me,” Wilder interjected. He stabbed his thumb against his chest.“Ican protect him.”

Rohan’s eyes widened.“Hisalpha?”

Wilder noticed the look of disappointment in Rohan’s eyes, and it stung. Words failed him. “He’s my omega.” Frowning, he searched his best friend’s face. “I just found out, but he’s known all this time.”

Rohan said nothing. Only his frown deepened.

“We don’t get to choose our omegas, Rohan. I didn’t know… had I known…” He scrubbed a hand over his face. “I don’t know what I would’ve done if I’d known.”
