“It’s a moot point.”

Wilder sensed anger in Rohan. “Are you… upset? That he’s mine?”

“No,” Rohan said. “Stunned? Yes. Angry over his incarceration? Absolutely.” Rohan placed a hand on Wilder’s shoulder. “Once I’ve had enough time for my brain to catch up to all this, I’m sure I’ll have more to say about you sleeping with my nephew.”

“Ah, but aren’t you the one who said he wasn’t your nephew? That he was an adult by the time you mated Gray?”

“A technicality you know I was using to skirt your whole nepotism argument.”

“I do,” Wilder agreed. “But if you can use it, so can I.” He searched the façade of the surrogacy prison, right next to the courthouse. Few lights were on in the late hour. “Will they… would they release him into the care of his alpha?”

Rohan shrugged. “I don’t know. There’s only a skeleton crew working this late at night, so the right people might not be there, but I can ask.”

Wilder followed Rohan into the lobby of the courthouse. He hadn’t been there often, but the few times before the interior had been brimming with activity. Late at night, it was a mausoleum, the sounds of their footfalls across the marble floor, echoing around them. They entered a small office with the lights ablaze and marched to the front desk.

“I’m here regarding an omega who was arrested tonight. Who do I speak to about releasing him?”

The man behind the desk yawned. “There’s no bond for an omega.”

“But his alpha is here.” Rohan motioned his way. “He could be released into the care of his alpha, yes?”

Wilder eyed the man, willing him to release Avery.

“Depends on the extent of the charges.”

“So? Who do I talk to about that?” Rohan asked.

“Follow me,” the man said, rising to his feet. He sauntered to a swinging gate and drew it open.

When Wilder attempted to trail behind the pair, the beta swung the gate closed. “Legal representation only. Alphas are too hot-headed about their mates.”

Wilder growled.

“See what I mean?” the man asked before walking away.

“It’ll be alright, Wilder. I’ll be right back.”

He nodded to Rohan, biting his tongue. Left to pace an office waiting room, Wilder was sure he’d go insane. Time dragged on, minutes heavy. Finally, Rohan reappeared.

“No luck. He can’t be released tonight nor will we be able to see him.”

“Fuck!”

“Tensen Atkinson was our surrogacy solicitor—that’s who I called. He’s an omega and family court attorney. He said he’ll meet with us here tomorrow morning at nine. He can then go on the record as Avery’s attorney and receive a copy of the charges—as well as get in to meet with him. I’ll assist, so I can keep us all informed about the proceedings.” Rohan sighed, wiping a hand down his face. “As if my very pregnant mate needed this additional stress right now.”

“I’m sorry,” Wilder murmured.

“We should’ve known it was going to happen eventually. It was only a matter of time before chaos erupted and he was caught. We weren’t blind. We saw the sparks between the two of you. We all did. I just didn’t realize you two were mates.”

“I didn’t want this to happen like it did. Not with him arrested.”

“I know. Doesn’t change the outcome, though.”

“No.”

Rohan clapped his shoulder. “Go home. Get some rest and I’ll see you in the morning.”

“As if I can sleep.”
