Avery closed his eyes. “What was the question?”
“You were out for nearly five years?”
“In and out. I still lived in the OQ, but I went out for school and work.”
“Wait a minute…” the omega across from him smiled. “School?”
“College.The College of Waltyn & Marris.”
“Seriously?” The omega chuckled. “We got ourselves a college boy here.”
Avery eyed his cellmate.
The one directly across from Avery waved a hand. “I’m Tab. I stabbed a beta in the hand. Which he rightfully deserved. He was groping me while I was onstage.”
“Ah,” Avery said, closing his eyes again.
Movement below had him opening them. Another face appeared just at the edge of his bunk. “Medjul. I stole food so my brothers didn’t go hungry. Landed right in here.”
A third one under Tab spoke up. “Ash. I refused my alpha.”
“Wait… refused himhow?”Avery asked.
“Refused to mate with him. He was a terrible, small-minded man. Unfortunately, he has a lot of money and influence and was able to have trumped up charges brought against me for something Ididn’tdo.”
“Really?How cruel.” Avery was intrigued. “What charges?”
“That I’d slept with another alpha after contracting with him. I had slept with another alpha, but I hadn’t signed the contract. Never planned to.”
“They can arrest you for that?”
“Alphas don’t like to hear the word no. Either I’m with him or I’m here. He told me he’d get me free if I’d accept him. Some choice,hmm?”
Avery frowned before looking at the omega who’d coerced him into spilling his story.
“Oh me? Might as well tell you before they do. I’m Gideon. I stabbed my alpha with a knitting needle in his sleep. Right through the eye. Went through brain. Made a big mess.”
Avery inwardly gasped. He’d heard something similar on the news not long before. “Youkilledyour alpha?”
“I was tired of him selling me to other alphas.” The omega grinned. “Joke’s on me, though… ‘cuz they’re going to force me to have sex with plenty of other alphas.Whatwas I thinking?”
Avery had never heard of such a thing. “He…sold you?”
“Money was tight. He was a lazy piece of shit who didn’t want to work, so he’d pimp me out to his friends. Friends of friends. Then it was strangers. He even sold me during a couple of heats. Luckily I didn’t get pregnant, but there were a few close scares.”
Avery swallowed back a bit of bile. “I thought… alphas protected their omegas?”
“Yeah… so they tell us. I’m sure there are some that are a lot better than mine was.” Gideon chuckled. “Was. I love saying that.He was.As in, he is no more.Past tense.”
Avery lifted his chin. While Gideon’s glee was a bit scary, he might’ve killed a man in the same situation. He didn’t know what he was capable of trapped like that. “Sounds like he deserved that knitting needle.”
Gideon grinned. “Oh, he did.”
Avery glanced at the final face. The small omega who’d been peeking out from the top bunk above Tab. He noticed Avery’s focus, turned over, and hid.
“That’s Vero. He’s… he’s…” Tab began.
“He’s a fucking nut,” Gideon finished.
