“He isnot,”Medjul spat. He eyed Avery and whispered, “He’s been here a long, long time. Rumor is he killed his alpha, too. He was sentenced to five babes… and he’s had at least that many miscarriages, if not more.”

“It’s affected him,” Ash said, pointing toward his head. “In a lot of ways.”

“You do realize he can hear what you’re saying,” Gideon asked loudly. “Not like it’s that big a space.”

“It’s nice to meet you, Vero. I’m Avery.”

Silence filled the cell a moment.

“Nice to meet you, Avery,” Ash said, offering a hand. “You might want to go ahead and try to get some sleep. It’ll be morning soon.”

As if I can sleep. He curled into a ball on his side, facing out. After a moment, he opened his eyes to see Gideon still staring. A sense of dread came over him. The omega smiled craftily.

“Can I… help you?”

“Don’t worry, College Boy. I’m only dangerous to shitty alphas.”

“Good to know,” Avery murmured, not fully convinced of his safety. Sleep was suddenly the furthest thing from his mind. He sat up in his bunk, staring at Gideon. Suddenly, he realized he’d finally stopped shaking and his stomach didn’t hurt as bad. Focusing on the others’ stories had somehow given him some relief… though it made him feel like a bit of a terrible person. Theirs were worse than his. Theft? Stabbing? Wrongfully incarcerated? Murder? What suffering they must’ve endured to lead them where they were.

Avery cast a glance to the side and saw Gideon still staring. “What?”

“You’rereallyhandsome,” Gideon said.

“Gideon!” Medjul cried. “Just go to sleep.”

Gideon walked closer to Avery’s bunk. “I have court in the morning, hence the inability to sleep.”

Avery swallowed thickly. “What do you think’s going to happen to you?”

“Welp, I killed an alpha. They might force me to replace him plus.”

“Replace him?”

“A judge can demand an alpha child. A friend of mine’s cousin—or some kind of relative—was sentenced to one alpha child. He ended up spitting out like three omegas before he finally got to that alpha. He was old and shriveled up by the time he got out. And totally messed up in the head.”

“Did they take the omega children, too?”

“Of course. Any child born in prison belongs to the state.”

“Shit.”

“Yep,” Gideon lamented. “I don’t plan on getting out of here any time soon.”

“But there are extenuating circumstances. Your alpha was abusing you.”

“Like they care,” Gideon said. “I’d already pled to the Guard several times, trying to seek support and a separation. They’d always send me right back to him.”

“That’s not right.”

“Nope. It’s not. But we omegas are only breeding chattel. Livestock. We have no rights.”

“It has to stop,” Avery said, more so to himself than Gideon.

“Yeah, well, it’s never going to stop.”

“Unless we band together andmakeit happen.”

“Good luck with that,” Gideon murmured. “So… tell me how you spent that last five years. I want to hear it all.”
