A flurry of footsteps came around the corner as soon as we entered.

“Did you find...oh Addie!” Sam threw her arms around me, but immediately pulled back when I winced in pain. She turned from me, towards Ryder, and gave him a small smile. I could tell she wanted to hug him as well, but refrained due to his injuries. “I’ll radio the others to tell them you’re back.”

While she hurried to do just that, Fallon helped me to the couch. Ryder sat beside me with a heavy sigh.

We both looked like shit.

“I don’t look like shit,” Ryder said, responding to my thought that I must’ve said aloud. “I look like a sexy beast. You look like shit.”

“Your mom looks like shit,” I retorted.

“Your mom fucked your dad!”

It felt so natural to fall back into our easy banter that I found myself laughing semi-hysterically. Ryder, after a moment of disbelief, began laughing as well. Soon, we were both laughing, and Fallon was staring at us as if we were insane.

Once the laughter subsided, Ryder turned towards me, wiping tears from his eyes.

And abruptly began laughing again.

“We were kidnapped by a crazy bitch!” he wheezed out.

“She beat the shit out of me!” I managedbetween fits of laughter.

“Fucking shit!”

Ryder and I laughed until the pain became too much.

We were a mess. We were broken and fucked up. So we laughed - we laughed because it was the only way to hide the scars we longed to hide behind.

We laughed because we weren’t okay, and we probably never would be.

We laughed because we were two tortured souls who just happened to find each other.

We laughed because we longed to be happy again.

And the laughter actually kind of helped.
