One Year Later
“Somewhere over the rainbow…bluebirds fly….”I hear soft singing coming from the nursery and poke my head inside.
Todd’s in the rocking chair with Penny, and the infant’s eyelids are drifting closed, his sweet voice lulling her to sleep. But I quickly realize that Todd’s voice isn’t the only one I’m hearing. Corey is harmonizing with him, leaning over the back of the chair so he can admire the baby.
We all knew from the second we laid eyes on her that Penny was genetically Andrei’s kid. There was just no mistaking it, she was his gender-swapped twin in perfect miniature.
And while there have been a number of jokes between Corey and Todd about “who’s next,” I know neither one of them cares. She’s our daughter, born from the love of all four of us, and we wouldn’t have it any other way.
Todd and I had both ended up moving in with the guys when I was about six months pregnant. (Needless to say, I got off scot-free when it came to moving boxes, and got to sit back and relax watching my three big strong men haul all my stuff around.)
While things certainly weren’t perfect, they were still better than I ever could have dreamed. Todd’s become deeply close with Corey and Andrei, and while he’s still focused pretty much solely on me in the bedroom, they’ve been happy to let him experiment a little, toeing the “heteroflexible” line.
I’d hoped that the three of them could be cordial, and I’d gotten so much more, with the three of them becoming best friends.
I feel an arm around my shoulder and jump, startled. “Just me,” Andrei whispers.
He stands with me and the two of us watch and listen to Corey and Todd finishing the lullaby. “We’re pretty fucking lucky, aren’t we?” Andrei asks me in the same low whisper.
I nod. “Yeah, we really are.”
“Kinda funny that a year ago, you were giving up on men entirely,” he chuckles.
I laugh with him. “Best decision I ever made.”
And I mean it, wholeheartedly. I would do it again in a heartbeat a thousand times over to get to this place.
When I’d come together with the three of them, I’d felt whole for the first time. Now, with Penny, our little family is even more complete, although it’s not finished yet. All of us are in agreement that we want a big family.
Which is just fine by me. Because I know I’ve got more than enough love to go around, and so do they.
Because love, true love, is infinite.
