I winked before turning, striding from the visitation room and down the halls. A sense of freedom filled me. Not only was I free from Mr. Black and millions richer, thanks to him, I was free from my past too. Now, I’d be able to live my new life alongside Hadrian, Wolf, and sweet Miranda.
Before I was even two steps outside the jail, I dug my cell out of my pocket and dialed Gaven’s number.
“What?” he greeted gruffly, his hard tone throwing me off.
“I just wanted to say thank you,” I countered, wondering what crawled up his ass and died.
“So it’s done?” he questioned, his tone softening.
“Yup.”
“Good. Is that all? I have a wedding to get to,” he revealed.
“A wedding,” I repeated, stunned. “Which one are you hitting? Groom or bride?”
His chuckle vibrated through the phone. “Neither, this time—it’s my own.”
I stopped walking, coming to a standstill in the middle of the parking lot. “You’re getting married?”
“I am.”
I couldn’t help the next words that left my lips. It was just too surprising. “Who in their right mind would willingly marry you?” I asked. “You’re not giving up the job, are you? Does she know?”
“She knows, Scarlett,” he replied. “She’s the second daughter of Raphael Price.”
Ice slipped down my spine. “You’re marrying into the Price family?” Shock and horror assailed me. Next to the Perelli family, the Price family was the single most dangerous mafia syndicate in the Northeastern United States. Having Gaven among their members … a thought occurred to me. A job I’d done a few years back for the family and a woman I’d met—I’d met Price’s daughter. One of them anyway, and the impression it had left had been a lasting one.
“I don’t give advice often,” I began, “but, Gaven, you need to be careful with what you’re getting yourself into. Jacqueline Price is not simply a tool for you to use. She’s dangerous.”
Gaven’s tone grew cool—noticeably even through the phone. “I’m always careful, Scarlett,” he replied. “And I’m not marrying Jacqueline. I’m marrying her sister. Now, I’ve got to go. Glad my connections could come in handy. See you around.”
With that, he hung up and I was left there—standing in the center of the Deswood Correctional Facility after having my ex murdered, wondering if Gaven would even survive his wedding night. But if he wasn’t marrying Jacqueline Price … then who the fuck was he marrying?
