“I’ll not have a brawl because some alphas think they own my body or the scents on my skin,” I said with what little control I had left. “The only alpha who would ever have a say to my behaviour is a mate. And that is one thing I’ll never have.” And I’d not just refuse their mate bites, I’d refuse their knots, I promised myself. If only promises weren’t so easily broken, whispered something softer inside of me that had flared hot at the sight of these mighty creatures attacking each other for my sake. I could not erase the image of Puck and Oberon fucking. I’d marvelled at the swell of their knots and wondered how it would feel to have a real knot in my sex rather than some dildo. Thank the goddess I already stank of sex and cum and lingering alpha musk for I felt the unmistakable gathering of slick between my thighs. As quickly as I’d slipped between the alphas, I retreated to Conny’s side. “I think we could do with a bath.”

“Yes,” the beta said with a rush. Before the alphas could object, she silently pulled me out the door and down a flight of stairs to a small room on the half landing. It was an astonishingly luxurious bathing chamber with a marble tub in the centre. An elaborate mosaic covered the floor, and a fresco stretched all the way to the ceiling. “It is Oberon’s favourite,” Conny said. Sucking her lips between her teeth, she made a whimpering sound before speaking. “Are… are things going to be like that from now on? The anger?”

“What? Of course not!” Her question left me dumbfounded. “I am sure you know how… Jude and I were very close,” I said cautiously. “However, that is over. What happened last night and this morning shall not be repeated. I promise you those alphas will never enter that room while I am with a lover.”

Her pursed lips spoke volumes.

“Do not say a word.” I pointed a finger at her.

“Never… though if you need tending again, I am happy to be of service.”

“Kiss me,” I asked. “Kiss me and wipe the slate clean.”

Outside of my flash heat, our kiss was sweeter. Like drinking a rich red wine for its depth and the way our lips lingered rather than battled in a flash heat. “There, there,” she murmured. “You don’t need me. You know what you need.”

I pulled back. “What?”

“Polly…” She sighed. “You are made to command alphas, to bring them to their knees with sex. And we betas are no challenge for you.”

“Fuck you,” I snapped and pushed her away. “You think omegas and alphas must mate each other? That their encounters must be some power exchange? No. I’ll none of that.”

“I think you are too much for anyone to handle!” She gave a howl of frustration. “Did you never think why you could never just settle with one lover? That one was never enough? You cannot be satisfied by betas. But what greater satisfaction for one like you than three alphas under your control, begging for your attention?”

I opened my mouth but no words came out. All those childish fears felt not so childish any more. “No one wanted to stay,” I scrambled. I shook my head. “No. Jude stayed. Sarah stayed.”

“But you kept Sarah out of your flat. You kept Jude from that hidden place we all know exists. You can’t let anyone in. No wonder Jude lied to you. And after what I just saw, I’m not in the mood to pander to you while you tell weave some fantasy that you are just like the rest of us. You’re an omega. You’ll always get your way. I’ll have someone bring hot water for your bath.”

“Don’t trouble yourself.” I was too stunned to say more. To respond to her… Her what? Accusations? I knew I could never be like anyone else. How I’d never have the luxury of being normal or comfortable in my own skin. “I’ll leave you.”

And like a petulant child I ran back to my cage as if it were some refuge rather than a mark of my imprisonment. But the lingering scents nearly drove me back into the hall. Above, I could hear—thought I could hear—the raised voice of arguing alphas. Rather than face what I had allowed to happen—I should have told Oberon I had no desire to see Jude—I found myself gathering every piece of fabric that had been left strewn about or piled on the bed and threw it into the hall. The window I forced open and fresh linens, those intended to create a nest, were brought out of chests. I made the bed again just to my liking and tucked the pins back under the pillows.

Turning towards the door, the pile of discarded bedding called to me. Instinct, my omega instinct urged me to retrieve the pieces that smelled the best. That would line my bed in preparation for my heat.

“One or two pieces won’t hurt,” I whispered.

Taking half a step, then another halting stride, I came face to face with Oberon.

I half expected him to taunt me with what had happened, instead he handed me the evening addition. Confused and curious, I read the article he pointed to.

Her Notorious H has caused a stir by taking two alphas as co-rulers of a criminal empire that stretches as far as their majesties’. Long known to reject all things of the more pugnacious dynamic, this development hopefully speaks of fewer alphas being held up on the highways. Felicitations to HNH.

“I was wrong to ever bet against you,” I crumpled the paper. “When did you put this notice in?”

“Notice? I thought it was you.” Oh, how I wanted to strangle some feeling out of him. Where had he learnt to keep those stronger emotions in check. Or perhaps he lacked those heartstrings that so easily plucked my moods to the fore.

“Not me, no.” I smoothed it once again, frowning over the wording. “Perhaps… but unlikely. But it could be Viola.”

He waited for me to elaborate. Why didn’t I see the harm in doing so? He soaked in information like a sponge. Used it then to weave his spider’s web which I feared I became even more entangled in with each passing day.

“My middle name is Nancy.”

“Is it? Very pretty. So your sister? Your brother-in-law, the duke, came to ensure you are well cared for.”

I shrugged. “Orley is officious.”

“Orley considers us excellently matched.”

I barked a laugh, too stunned by the thought. “You must be mad. Orley would never recommend an alpha to mate into our family. The man seems to think he must stand in place of our mother.”
