The watchmaker dropped his tools. “Oh, my.” He lifted his lens to investigate. “It seems I’ve set off some sort of mechanism.”

“What mechanism?” Shadow’s tone of voice scaled three octaves.

The collar shrank and tightened around his throat. Scratching at it, he furiously tried loosening it, but that only seemed to make it worse. Veins bulged in Shadow’s neck, and he made a choking noise, as if the thing strangled him.

“Do something!” I shouted at the watchmaker, shaking the bars of my cell.

“I only made it worse, dear.” The watchmaker backed away from the panther.

Panic thrashed inside me. If someone didn’t do something, the collar would choke Shadow to death. But everyone seemed to be frozen to the spot.

Magic, both dark and light, lay within me somewhere. Yesterday, I’d used it to save Phantom from bleeding to death. All I had to do was call upon the good magic again. A silent terror gripped me. What if I released the dark magic accidentally? The one that had burned and cut him. It could work against Shadow and end his life.

Flipping hell.He was definitely going to die if I did nothing. I held out my hands. Here goes nothing.
