Chapter 16

Help this shifter, I pleaded with the good magic inside me.

With all my might, I summoned it. The tips of my fingers glimmered with power. Hundreds of invisible shards of glass tinkled. Bright light shone in Shadow’s face, like sunlight reflected off a bank of windows. A circular mirror formed around the edges of his collar, sucking the dark magic away from the magical choker and into the glass that formed on the collar’s surface. The metal expanded, giving him more room to move, and he sucked in a breath. The glass darkened, cracks splintered through it, and it shattered, sprinkling onto the floor.

My back hit the wall.Sea god!I’d done it! But that was no guarantee I’d be able to do it again. The second time I’d tried my magic on Phantom, the darkness had escaped me. What if that meant the next time I used my power, only dark magic would respond?

“Thank the goddess.” Shadow panted, rubbing his neck.

Flare’s astonished gaze switched between me and the fragments on the floor. He scratched the back of his head. “What the hell kind of hoodoo was that?”

Oh.He hadn’t seen me use my magic to save Phantom. Flare had been knocked out for that little show.

“What?” I said. “Never saw a girl use a little magic before?”

Flare rubbed his throat, as if imagining it being sliced by my little glass shards. “Keep that dark trick away from me,” he warned.

Perhaps if he talked to me with disrespect again…I might just use a little magic on Flare.

Shadow turned in my direction. “Thank you for saving my life.”

Now I guessed we were even. But that didn’t free me from the debt I still owed his family and all the workers from his plantation.

“We have to find another way to get these things off,” Shadow said. “What about Snow’s magic?”

“No way,” I protested, waving my hands in the air. “I got lucky staving off my stepmother’s magic temporarily. But I’m a complete amateur at this sort of thing. I don’t have the slightest clue about runes or what they mean. What if I hurt you like I did to Phantom?”

Shadow’s gaze fell to the ground.

Grimm stepped forward, most likely to propose an alternative. “I only know of one other way. Only a dragon’s shriek can shatter Draconian.”

“But that will burst the panther’s ear drums,” I said, holding on to the bars.

Grimm shrugged. “The shifters heal fast.”

“No,” said Flare. “No way. I hate dragons.”

“We don’t have a choice, Flare,” Shadow said. “We’re dead in four days if we don’t figure out a way to get these things off.”

“I’ll go with them,” I offered. “My father went to boarding school with the dragon king. They were old and dear friends.”

“Are you crazy?” Shadow said. “Wearing the collars make us unable to control our panthers around you!”

“We’ll maintain a safe distance.” I said.

“I don’t approve of this,” Grimm chipped in.

Oh, he always disapproved of everything. Old grouch. Had everyone gone mad? I was just trying to help.

“Because I know you’d probably go behind my back and let these two out,” Grimm said. “I’m leaving you in here until I figure out what to do next.”

“What?” I pressed my face hard against the bars. “I accept your offer to be the face of the resistance. And for this role, I demand that I to be set free.”

“It doesn’t work that way, Snow,” Grimm said, his face a solemn mask as usual.

Desperate times called for desperate measures. A girl could only try to bargain. Now he left me in deep shit.

“Grimm, no!” I squeezed the bars until my fingers hurt. “Please, don’t lock me up; I don’t like it.” Yes, my voice soared, but I didn’t care.
