But unlike the towering midnight-haired Alpha, this one keeps coming, lengthening his long strides. White fangs glow in the dark. “Now, I can tell you I’ll be gentle.” He jerks his attention toward the trees. “But the rest will be here before we know it…and I need to have my fill of you.”

I shake my head as a tremor slices through me.

“God, I love the scent of your fear,” the male growls, his voice savage and unkind. “Don’t worry. You’ll be wearing my mark before long.”

He reaches up and grasps the front of his shirt. With one brutal yank, the fabric splits, tearing from his chest before he drops the ruined garment to the ground.

Muscles ripple in the night. All that power…all that lust. His dark eyes glitter like steel in the night. Panic floods me, clamping my insides tight.

“No,” I whisper. “Please. No.”

He’s on me in an instant, lunging to close the distance in a panicked heartbeat. One hand goes around my arm, the other closes over my breast. He looks down at me. “I’ll be gentle, next time, I promise.”

Claws pierce the fabric of my dress. The sound of tearing cloth starts before a low and unmistakable warning growl comes from behind me. “Take your fucking hands off her.”

I stiffen at the sound. Hope surges in my chest as a whimper slips from my lips. Dušan approaches, and the smell of blood and power washes over me. “I won’t ask you again, Vin.”

“She’s not marked.” The male turns to pierce me with his dangerous stare. “Not yet.”

The sting from his claws cuts deeper, pressing in around my breasts. Is this what it means to be marked? Am I now this savage male’s property? Terror drives in deep. “Please, no. Not you. Not like this.”

Vin wrenches his gaze to mine as he curls his lips. “You don’t want me, female?”

“No, she doesn’t,” Dušan answers for me. “Now remove your claws before I remove them for you…with your own fucking teeth.”

There’s a wince as fear drives to the surface of the wolf’s eyes. Dušan smells savage, the thick, cloying metallic scent of blood hanging heavy in the air.

It isn’t his blood.

Not his.

Relief courses through me as Vin unfurls his fingers and lowers his hand.

“Now let her go.”

A low, pissed-off sound flies from the male’s lips before he lets me go.

“Meira,” Dušan murmurs.

A connection between us surges.

“Hurry,” he whispers. “Run farther up the mountain inside the settlement, and I’ll find you.”

That bond between us throbs with life. Something crashes through the bushes behind us. I swallow hard, give a nod, and step sideways, whipping my gaze from his in the last moment before I surge forward.

I race into the night, bounding over fallen logs and around thick, thorny brambles. Thorns snag on my dress, scratching deep. I push down the sting and keep on running, clambering blindly, pushing myself forward with the knowledge that the edge of the metal fence should be near.

The mountain towers above, a monolithic giant brooding and dangerous. I suck in sawing breaths and glance over my shoulder.

I can’t hear them anymore…can’t feel Dušan.

My hands tremble as I climb farther, focusing on the motion of lifting my foot on the steep ground and pushing my body higher and higher, until I have to stop to catch my breath. I clutch a hold of the rock and lower my head to the surface.

Trees spread out like a blanket far below me. I’m high up…reallyhigh.

“Take your fucking hand off her.”Dušan’s words fill my head as I straighten and set my gaze to the task.

He hurt and maims others for me.
